TV Hot Keys?
« on: March 20, 2003, 06:36:52 am »

I've mentioned this on several occasions before & am wondering is it is going to happen some time soon.

As MC appears to be getting nearing final release I am wondering if TV Hot Keys (keyboard) will be implemented for most of the common TV controls such as...

* Volume.
* Brightness.
* Contrast.
* Hue.
* Saturation.
* Sharpness.
* Gamma.

I would like to see it done the way ATI does it with the TAB key which cycles through all the common controls one at a time with on-screen indication with green vertical bars.

The green vertical bars should be the same size & location as is used by the Logitech keyboard on-screen volume indicator for a good match in size.  This is because so many of us are using the wonderful Logitech keyboards.

This would make the TV complete for me.

All I can tell you is that, it, or at least the part of it that I am to implement, is the next on my list of things to do.

One thing I forgot to add is I would also like it if the Left Arrow & Right Arrow keys were used to change the currently selected TV control.

Left hand on the TAB key to change TV control selections & right hand on the left & right arrow keys to change the level of the current selection.

NO mouse should have to be used for the common TV controls!

That would be simply wonderful!!

*cough* it'd be sweet to have "Girder-Less" integration with major remote manufacturers like ATI and Streamzap *cough*

BTW, Yaobing... much respect for the good work.  TV accounts for about 85% of why I use MC.  Keep up the development on the Tivo functions and the internet program guide... I can't wait for all of it to be done.

I also have the TV on by default but most of the time am listening to digital DMX music on one of the 46 music only channels on my digital cable TV.

The sound is really very good & I love how they always provide details about the artist, album, cut, music & etc.

This information helps me a lot when it comes time to buy CD's.

This feature is in TV since the last couple of builds. However,

1. You have to hold down CTRL and SHIFT keys while pressing TAB or LEFT/RIGHT Arrow keys. This makes them in line with other TV related shortcut keys (Start/Stop recording, changing TV standard, capture still picture etc.). You can use you left thumb and index fingers to hold down CTRL and SHIFT, while using middle finger to press TAB key and right hand to press arrow keys - almost as convenient as ATI's.

2. It does not work when TV is displayed internally, because some other controls in MC window is stealing keyboard focus. You will have to try it in Windowed mode, or Fullscreen mode. Hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Hi Yaobing;

Wonderful... somebody is really working on this ;D

However, it seldon works at all.  Sometimes Contrast will pop up but the arrow keys will not change it.

Also, pressing the Ctrl/Shift/Tab keys will not bring up anything other then Contrast.

Should be pretty nice once all the bugs are worked out.

More info on TV Hotkeys problem...

Discovered I can cycle through all the TV basic controls but still the arrow keys do nothing when I hold them down.

Discovered if I keep tapping the right or left arrow key then the setting level will change but at only one step at a time.

This is a very slow way to make changes.  On the ATI A-I-W TV I can either tap the arrow key (for small changes) or simply hold the arrow keys down then let go (for larger changes).

This is easier then having to keep tapping the arrow keys.

Another problem...
Sometimes the hot keys won't pop up until I click the mouse on the TV screen even though the TV screen is in the foreground.

Also...
If I bring up the Hotkeys but do not make any changes with the arrow keys they can not be brought again until I click the mouse on the TV screen.

Seems like the TV is losing focus if no changes are made by way of the arrow keys.

if the right & left arrow keys affect settings i.e. volume, contrast, would the up & down arrow keys affect channel?  Then could you type Ctrl-# to change to channel # ?

In fullscreen mode we know TV loses keyboard focus when the toolbars go into hiding. Matt will fix that.

No, channels are changed with CTRL+N (next) and CTRL+L (last).
