Creating Media Categories/Types
« on: February 26, 2020, 10:10:49 pm »

Hi Guys,

I'm new to JRiver.  I've recently completed an extensive cleanup and reorganization of my media library.  Now I'm looking for a program to use as a front end rather than flipping through folders and doing things manually.  I've separated my media into two types Audio and Video.  I have several categories for each type.  For Audio I have Music and Audiobooks.  For Video I have Movies TV Shows Anime Motion Comics and Concert Videos.   Each category is further organized by Genre as well as Studio Live Compilation Boxed Set Demo and Bootleg groupings for Music with similar groupings for other categories where appropriate.   All of this organization is done using folders.  I'm wondering if it is possible to modify the main Treeview to include additional media types and groupings.  Any assistance you can provide is appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

All of the above can, and is better, done in tags. Tags can be in files, or just stored in fields in the MC Library. Tagging, Views, Smartlists, and the use of the Search and Expression Languages in MC are some of its most powerful features.

For example, a file can only exist in one sub-directory, while you could tag a file with multiple values for many tags. Perhaps a Movie is both an Adventure and a Comedy. You would give it Genre tags on both "Adventure" and "Comedy".

As you have already reorganised your media it should be easy to tag the files appropriately, and then you can use those tags in standard and custom Views to show your media the way you want to see it. No more flipping through folders!

Start with Getting Started in the Wiki, and progress from there. Ask specific questions when you get stuck.
