Trying to get RPi4 Id + HDMI + receiver to bitstream
« on: March 18, 2020, 03:33:54 am »

I have been fiddling around with my RPi4 + Id tonight trying to get streaming to work over HDMI into my Denon receiver, and have been unable to do so.  PCM seems to work OK.

My expectation is that I should be able to bitstream just about anything with this device (including AC3, DTS, DSD, multichannel DSD...)  Is that correct?

As far as I can tell (and I'm very iffy here), the problem seems to be that the HDMI device only supports 16 bit sample size, and the audio path popup always says that there is not enough bit width for a direct connection.  This is for both DTS and AC3.  (DSD actually seems more broken than that, but first things first.)

I wonder if I am using the right audio device. In the device list, I see basically 7 devices - the "default" device which only supports stereo, and 3 pairs of HDMI devices, one mixed, one hw direct, and one hw with software mixing (each with HDMI/HDMI1 pairs).  I'm trying to correct with the hw direct one (although I've tried the others and also cannot get bitstreaming to work with them.)

Am I trying to accomplish the unsupported here?  Is there a standard set of settings for RPi4 audio hardware I can consult?

Got vnc remoting working - here is a picture of what happens when I play an AC3 file.

You won't be able to bitstream DSD over HDMI, it's not possible to do so from any sort of computer including a Pi.
