Songs that MC on Win 10 can't play, but play on iPad via JRemote?
« on: September 16, 2020, 02:08:56 am »

My Windows 10 install can't play or convert the format for a few songs. They simply don't play, and the conversion (m4a to mp3) fails after seconds. I just noticed that I can play those files using JRemote on my iPad.
Are there ways that I can try to make those songs playable again on Win?

It’s not a complete album, only a couple of songs. Not sure, and I don’t know how to find out?
And why can JRemote play the songs, but not the PC? It’s the same file and the same instance of MC.

Are they .m4p files? If so, they're protected with DRM.

If they are .mp4 - Apple / itunes had an option to download DRM free versions of tracks previously purchased.  Not sure if it is still an option (I haven't used iTunes in a long time).  From memory some of the DRM protected tracks I had were no longer available on itunes - so could not get a DRM free version

As to playing on your iPad - I assume that the iPad is associated with your apple account and is OK with the DRM protected material.

Thanks for the replies.
Yes, they are m4a files. The album no longer exists on iTunes / Apple Music, which is where I bought it.

It’s odd that only 2 songs of that album can’t be played / converted.

Been digging a bit deeper.

The files seem to be perfectly fine, except for playback in MC on W10: I can import the m4a files into iTunes and into Media Monkey and they play perfectly fine. In Media Monkey I can convert the files into mp3 - I haven't tried others tools.
So, problem solved for me, but mystery remains: why can't MC play the tune and why can't it convert it? (they don't show up in the 'bad files' data base).
