  • MC9 & iPodv3 - doesn't get much better...
Compatible with new iPod
« on: April 15, 2003, 03:36:21 pm »

I have 6 days left on my trial subscription to MC9, and I had every intention of buying a copy --- until the new iPod rumors started up again. For a variety of reasons, I believe there is a new iPod that will be released on 4/28. I am new to the MP3 world, and I am holding off on buying MC9 because I don't know if it will be fully supported (AAC and whatever else). Any reassurances any of you can provide?

Midpack, man,

They're just rumors.  I'm about 60% convinced that they're going to come true, but until then, don't sweat it dude.

If you go to the store, right now, and get an iPod, I don't believe that you will be dissatisfied.  It's an excellent player (I bet you can tell that by my sig and avatar, eh?)

As far as will MC be compatible?  I'm not with J River, but I can probably tell you with authority that there's no way to tell if it'll be compatible with the iPod v3 (which is what we're kind of calling it over at the 'lounge).  Apple may take the opportunity to re-do the way the database is ran.  The PC-compatible v3's may (according to rumor, that is) not even have firewire at all, but be USB2 only.  Heck, maybe the v3 won't even show up as a removable disk anymore.

I guess what I'm trying to say is don't fret about rumors and don't fret about technology that may be introduced.  In the tech game, you'll never win the "wait till they're done upgrading it" game.  There'll always be something better around the corner.

MC and the iPod v1 and v2 work GREAT together.

To Steve, Jim, Matt, et al...

About the AAC thing...

Some of the rumors involve the iPod v3 may be able to playback more than just mp3.  There's talk of OGG and AAC and MP3-Pro.  I've never actually fiddled with these formats, but I was wondering... can MC9 work with them (rip, encode, etc) in its present incarnation?

Not sure if you have Nero installed but there's an AAC plugin for that that supposedly was tweaked over the original AAC release and it's pretty good.

I looked into it for a while because my mp3 player reads aac. Unfortunately they were so stupid when they made it that it can read aac format files, but only ones that have been pre-encrypted to .lse format and so you cant make your own .aac files that work with it.
Total moronic decision by the design team to make the player more designed to what the music industry wanted rather than towards what the customer wanted/needed.

I had a feeling some new iPod announcements would be coming up soon?

Where can I get the lowdowns on iPod rumors?

And yes, I know they are rumors, and until the Keynote comes, we'll not really know.

Actually, people at Hydrogen Audio find the Nero AAC plug-in to be slightly worse than the Psytel encoder.

MC will play AAC. But tags are messy. MC seems to be able to add in id3v2 to its own db. Sometimes it gets grumpy and says there is an error, but the tag has shown up in the past. (Note/BEG: Next version please let us specify an apev2 tag for database entries!)

Last I heard, Nero was probably going to adopt an apev2 type of tag. Or maybe vorbis comments. Not sure.

Apple could do the world a huge favor and let MPC be released to the masses with an iPod that is compatible. But this might go against their thinking if they decide to buy that music company. Then they'd be more likely to introduce yet another secure format of their own, ala Sony and Atrac(?).
