Based on what I listen to, I'd have to say that Old Country would be Loretta Lynn, Kitty Wells, Hank Williams, etc.
And I would have to say that Garth Brooks, Dixie Chicks, Alan Jackson, etc. would be New Country.
Of course there is probably lots of opinion about any genre.
I'd have to say good luck in any labeling of music.
Glen.

Careful with New Country...it has been known to peel the paint off in car installations...has something to do with excessive use of the steel guitar (harmonics maybe?).

I agree with Glen, and add that new Country is much closer in style to Rock than it used to be.  You'll hear some Country artists' songs being played on radio stations that don't usually play Country.  Some of the Country artists tend to do more 'Crossover' than others; some examples would be Shania Twain and Faith Hill.  For just plain outlandish fun, try Joe Diffie or Neal McCoy or Toby Keith.

Although sometimes helpful and witty, I think xen-uno missed the helpful boat this time.

Rock? Maybe Pop music. Rock ----> no.

In the same vein, Michael Jackson has been called a ROCK star. Uhmm, no.

Thank you.
I am old country  and very old county,Texas country ,rockabilly.americana and alternative country.
Look like new country not for me ,even if i like  Dixies Chicks.

Most of he good country is Rock &Roll.
In fact , Rock&Roll just come from country.
And much BEFORE Elvis Peanuts Butter, who ,by the way did 3 good albums in his all life, well let' say 4.
We may try to make a band of metal country....have to think about it.

Funny ,on MP3.com ,they mess around.
If you play the Americana playlist ,you get Alternative Country, and if you play the Alternative Country one you get Americana.
Did not find great Americana on MP3.com but many  many very very +++ good alternative country bands.

I do not know if it is new country ,but there is a song by ?? -a name with a lot of Y and W- Dwi something - who not only is Rock but that can be see as a Rock Classic :Cadillac

And Rosanna Cash" Records Shop" is Rock more than Country

xen uno is right. When Alan Jackson, Clint Black etc. came on the scene so called country music began to hurt my ears and soon all my friends and I started collecting the old stuff. Same with rock in 1964. The Beatles I Wanna Hold Your Hand ended our interest in Rock and my wife and I began to listen to old folks music.  Many of our friends who never listen to music now when they hear my collection they perk up and ask me where they can get this stuff. Even my kids like the old stuff so its just not us old folks.

Dwight (?) Yokum - Guitars and Cadillacs.

Yes that may be considered rock. But to call some of the 'New Country' rock is a little bit absurd. Closer to a country pop is probably more accurate. Ick, any of the new stuff is awful. My parents listened to some the greats of country when I was growing up. There are few and far between, any that can rival them today.

Dwight  yes ,but i do not think Yokum is the name.
It is not 'new country' .It is few years old ,and ,not sure, but i think he is dead ,in this case drug or accident cause he was young.
Concerning 'new country' i cannot tell ,because i did not listen ,cause of it i asked.
But if like Garth Brooks, in this case yes it is pop ,the kind 'never ending warm water'

This week i found a 3 cds box ,new for $5.
On Emporio records " the essential country collection ' .
But it is far from average collection.
There is great songs and singers not part of the  regular various artists.
Country is a no go here. So when i find some ,it is for no money

LC > I think xen-uno missed the helpful boat this time

I did...and let me tell you why....

After playing around with Smartlist Rules and constructing various ones I felt a sense of deja vu. Turns out that when my brain boots up in the morning and reads the autoexec.bat file, it reads a curious looking line (right after LH \\xenno\brain\himem.sys). Some of you may recognize it....

-genre="New Country"

Since the file is Read Only, I can't modify it (plus I don't have Administrative rights).

So there you have it...it's not my fault I am the way I am.
