MC server running Linux on a NUC
« on: July 17, 2021, 10:55:15 am »

I might have to look into another option for my MC server. Everything I have tried so far has some limitations, The NAS doesn't have HDMI output, so no much playback, the iMac is not reliably on at all times and the rPi only does 16 bit (which may not be a real problem as I am not sure I could hear the difference, unless there are other limitations linked to that). Maybe a small Linux box would be good.
Anyway, thanks again for letting me know

You could use an IdNUC for multichannel 24 bit HDMI or roll your own.

Thanks Bob, would I be able to customize the NUC, like install the 1TB SATA SSD from the Raspberry, upgrade RAM, keep Linux up-to-date and install additional Linux apps?

If you rolled your own. It would be very similar to doing the same on a pi.
The Id however is a closed system, it's designed to be turnkey. It can be updated with new versions of MC and assorted security updates but new apps can't be installed on it.

Thanks Bob, I'll look into rolling my own. Sounds like a fun project.

I am planning on getting a barebones NUC and set it up as a MC server running on Linux. In terms of MC performance what are the critical factors that I need to be aware of?
Is it processor clock speed, number of threads, amount of memory?
Many thanks for any tips
