Is there a way to disable HDR in madVR for SDR content?
« on: August 31, 2021, 01:59:17 am »

When playing SDR content on MC, the colors super bright and overly saturated. If I move the mouse to cause the UI to show, the colors return to normal. The opposite behavior is true when playing HDR content. Colors look good when playback is normal, but look dull and faded when the UI has been invoked.

I've figured out madVR is the most likely culprit, and I've tried all sorts of settings in madVR for HDR, but the only thing that seems to work is to manually enable RO-HQ for 4K HDR content, and then switch to RO-Standard for SDR. Is there anyway to do this automatically? Or some setting in madVR to get it to recognize when SDR content is being played and not render it as HDR? I've done a lot digging and searching but I'm sorta lost at this point.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like same problem as https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,130379.0.html

Where HDR gets stuck after playing HDR movie. I assume you have NVidia gpu, as its the one that causes this with some NVidia drivers.

My suggestion if your gpu has some horsepower, to use MadVR to do tone mapping ... then your display dont need to enter HDR mode.

Oh nice, thanks so much for this! I read through your guide and have a much better understanding of the issue now, thank you!

I'll try and dig into this a little more tonight. I do have an NVidia card (RTX 3080) so tone mapping through MadVR shouldn't be an issue. If it's enabled is it smart enough to not crank up the brightness and saturation on SDR content?

Tone mapping in MadVR only tone map HDR video (it detects HDR metadata in video streams) ... it does not touch SDR content.

Current version of MadVR in MC gives excelent results.

Latest usable beta is 113 ...  that one has dynamic tone mapping (it adjust level of compression based on scene brightnes ... similar to what Dolby Vision and HDR10+ do) ... its a bit more complex to use as there are more things to play arpund with ... and unfortunately, MC does not provide support for beta version ... so if you run into problems with betas or have a question ... you need to seek support from other communities (reddedit or avs forums)

You are my hero! I just tried enabling the "use pixel shaders" in MadVR's HDR settings for the display, everything looks great now! Thanks so much!

Just to be clear that I did the right thing, I looked up my display and found a source that suggested it supports up to 444 nits for HDR content. That's the number I'd put in the target peak nits field, correct?

Thats the number you start with ... then adjust it to your liking ... lowering it will make image brighter ... bringing it up makes more "hdr effect"
