Drive Stalls
« on: April 02, 2022, 04:08:32 am »

Hi
After much grunting an groaning managed to open up JRiver on new iMac
Started to add to library from ext hard drive. It stalled after about 10% of them
Then I found the ext drive was no longer listed to browse.
Re started and tried again same thing. Hard drive vanishes.

Now I have deduced this is the JRiver programme cos the ext drive stays visible when I use it with another program.

Any ideas guys ?

Desperate to get my music collection back

Turn off all auto import.  Import one folder at a time.

You may be seeing a bug with the external drive.

By this you mean one album at a time ?
There’s 3000 or more !

Also ... how to turn off auto import?

Read about import on the wiki.

Import one folder at a time.  If you have a lot of big files to analyze, the drive may not hold up well.

Something is not working properly.
Can you check the activity monitor to see if is CPU or Disk I/O bound? (under Applications->Utilities)

I really can't find that. Is it part of the JRiver screen?

No, it's a MacOS program.

That just looks like access to the forum.
Look for high cpu access on the cpu tab or very high disc access on the disk tab.

Turn off audio analysis when importing. (import settings)

If it’s a spinning drive, change thumbnail threading to low. (search for threading in options)

Turn off waveform analysis in options (search for waveform)

Your external drive disconnect points to bad usb port, cable, or lack of power that’s showing up because of heavy use.

Does it have an external power supply? If it’s a spinner the power supplied by the usb cable may be marginal under load.

Dave,

What you are describing sounds like some kind of failure of the OS to read the drive.  Some information might help us narrow this down a little bit.

1.  What format is this drive?  If you right click the drive name in FINDER, you can do Get Info and it will tell you the format.
2.  Do you have a backup of this data somewhere?
3.  Do you have a spare drive you could try copying this one to?

I ask these weird questions because it seems possible that your drive is failing.

As I understand your post, the Mac OS is actually unmounting the drive.  You said it is "no longer available for browsing".  If the computer is unmounting the drive something is probably quite wrong with it.

Brian.

Hi Brian
Thanks for your reply. The issue of not recognising the drive has gone away. That was resolved when I disable auto add for the library.
I am confident the drive works ok,
The only issue now is that JRiver stalls after 20 - 30 seconds. Stopping play, so I can't actually play a song or an album

Take care. MD
