View Scheme
« on: December 01, 2002, 06:07:23 pm »

I have finally migrated to MJ9.

I am impressed with the new view scheme options. Customizeable view schemes are probably one most important strengths of MJ.

Previously I had added a wish to make view scheme even more powerful. Nobody commented on that. I want to request a very simplified version of it, which shouldn't be difficult to implement and which seems a very natural extension to me.

As View Schemes get complex, it gets difficult to go down the trees to make a selection. I propose a new scheme:
"Artist - Album".

The nodes for that scheme would look like:

Queen - Greatest Hits I
Queen - Greatest Hits II
...
Dire Straits - Alchemy
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms
...

The list will be equivalent to the number of Albums and there will be redundent artist names (unlike Artist/Album view) but I think that this will be cognitively better than Artist/Album.

This way of organization is already used in MJ at CD burning options and in album thumbnail list style (in MJ9). I think adding that to view schemes is a natural extension.

Here's an idea for a great feature! We can already create our own custom tags whose values are stored in the database for each record. Now, suppose our friends at J River ( :) ) introduce a new concept, say "calculated custom tag", which doesn't have stored values in each record but a single formula defined in one place.

You could then define a calculated custom tag called "Artist - Album" defined to be "[ARTIST] - [ALBUM]" and use it just like any other property?

Is this feasible? Or is it perhaps already possible to do similarly using SmartLists?

i've requested this before - this, i think, is the only big thing missing from the otherwise very flexible and powerful view scheme system in MJ9. being able to list stuff using a scheme like

[GENRE]
+[ARTIST]
++[YEAR]: [ALBUM]

would be awesome.

Funny( :)),

At one point, I had requested the same thing in the wish list.
I very strongly continue support that tag idea. Can maybe someone from MJ can comment on that; whether it is difficult or inefficient to program? It would increase general useability greatly.

Here is an additional idea:
similar customizeable templates could be defined for the "file list grid"/ "album thumbnail" templates on the right handside. currently, the default seems to be [ARTIST]-[ALBUM] in thumbnail view.

Great ideas.  Let us think on it a bit and see what we can come up with.

Thanks!

Great idea on the calculated fields.  I just added it to my wish list with a slight enhancement:  The ability to specify a default when the field is defined.  I.E.  The default for my new "Album Artist" field would be "[Artist]".  Then I can put "(Soundtrack)", "(Genre Mix)" or the like in the field for specific tracks as I see fit.

Bump Bump!

You said you were going to think about it and this is DEFINITELY a great feature that would be soooo nice to see in MC9. Dunno if it's too big a feature to slip into 9 or not but just reminding of it :)

Yes Please!!!!  This would sort out the thing about sorting albums in the view tree by year...  This seems to have been requested a lot recently and not just by me ;D  Even if it was just an extension to the move/copy tool so that we could merge data fields together into a new field eg create a year - Album field using the existing Year and album fields.  Could possibly even be a plugin ... I may even be able to write it with a little bit of help ;D

Cheers

Adam

P.S.  Keep up the good work...the program is really starting to rock now!!!
