Problem with User Accounts and access rights
« on: February 26, 2003, 01:41:45 pm »

Hi,

Running XP I have configured 4 users on my PC.
One administrator, one Superuser and two normal Users.

It seems like I can only making MC9 work properly if the user is at least member of the Superusers group.

One observation is that I don't see the plug-ins in the plug-in manager if the user is not at least member of Superusers group. Another observation is that I don't see any libraries in the library manager.

By changing the users membership to Superuser or Administrator all the configures plug-ins as well as the libraries appears again.

I have granted access rights to the install directory and the library manager do point at a shared folder.

Any good ideas??

Thanks
Jan

did you install it under each user, or just provide a link for each user?

I just applied a link.
My default users is member of Admin. I installed logged in as my default user.

The second user is member of SuperUsers. The link works fine when logged in as this user.

But for user number 2 and 3 (members of Users only) the link does not work.

Installing the software more than once on the same PC should not be necessary I hope.

i think you need to install MC under each user for it to work correctly.

Not recent builds.  They should work from one install.

I really can't make this work.

I have reinstalled several times and experimented with different setups. My conclusion is that.

1. You can't install the program if you are not at least member of the super users group, otherwise the installation does not allow registering the plug-ins.

2. If temporarily changing a users membership to be member of Superusers and then installing, then resetting the user to be member of plain users, works OK. For this user it works. But for the other users only being member of the users group it still does not work.

3. I also experimented with installing the software for each user. Only the first user I install the software as can make it work when changing their membership back to be member of the users grooup.

I have a feeling that the problem is somehow related to registry write rights which plain users normally does not have.

It would be nice if this problem gets solved before the final release.

Thanks

What version?

If you install the first copy and the license for a user with admin privileges, the subsequent copies do not need to be special.

This changed about 6 weeks ago for Media Center.

I am trying this with the latest beta.
"Media Center Registered 9.0.121"

You are right that I can start Media Center when I am logged in as the other users with low privileges. There is also an Icon on their individual desktops with the link to the executable. But.... the plug-ins that were installed initially are gone when I look into the Plug-in Manager. So it does not work. If I upgrade the membership of these users to at least Super Users, then the plug-ins appear as expected and it works nicely.
