Is installing windows 11 desktopmainboard cpu drivers necessary?
« on: September 19, 2023, 10:58:50 am »

I have a question which I do not get a good answer to. I have done a lot of reinstall of windows 10 and 11 on my two desktops. normally I install drivers from my mainboards website. This is a cpu question mainly or security, both my desktops uses cpu without built in gpu(have gpu card on both destops). Audio I use seperate devices.

So is it necessary or advisable to install amd chipset drivers or for intel mainboards, the inf driver and intel managment engine driver?

My recent install of both my pc with windows 11 I choose to not do anything on the amd mainboard and my other intel based mainboard desktop.

Everthing runs as it should. All I have done is just do all the windows updates.  I really do not see any difference in performance compare to when I chose to install them.

Does anybody know anything about this? On my amd mainboard I even sent an email to the vendor and I said that I do not notice any difference and the service agent did not said it was necessary. I could not get a clear answer from him either. I also told him that the amd chipset drivers at their website had old chipset drivers and that amd had newer. But he could not answer me other that it everything runs ok, then it is probably not necessary to install them.

Does anybody here have a view on this?

What type of CPU(s) do your machines have? If it's an AMD CPU, download and use the AMD chipset drivers. If it's an Intel CPU make sure you're using the latest Intel drivers. It's going to depend though, some systems may have mixed components, e.g. AMD CPU and Intel ethernet/wi-fi or something like that.

For the AMD chipset drivers, I highly recommend getting them from AMD directly and not from the motherboard manufacturer simply because AMD's is always going to be the latest.

Ok! I have Amd Ryzen i7 2700x and I found the latest chipset drivers. On the other desktop which I use JRiver, I got the Intel i5 12600kf cpu and here I got realtek ethernet and on the amd pc I got intel ethernet. But I can not find drivers to this cpu. only this site:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/134590/intel-core-i512600kf-processor-20m-cache-up-to-4-90-ghz/downloads.html  (the first link says driver when you expand it...so this is the one(Intel® Graphics Driver 31.0.101.4824 (WHQL) this is igpu driver is it not so not a plain intel cpu driver? Is it important for JRiver or just wifi/internett use streaming and such. As I understand You cpu drivers are important when it comes to the ethernet driver, this is where it is most important.

Thank You for helping! Amd is done.

But I am not sure about intel cpu. AI answer on edge says

"Please note that there are different types of drivers available for specific components of the processor. For example, there are graphics drivers and extreme tuning utility drivers available for the Intel Core i5-12600KF CPU"

So as I understands this, is that these are 1) graphics drivers( which is the first download link. but 12600KF, KF stands for no graphics integrated driver only a pure cpu). 2) the second "driver" is only for tuning the cpu. and the third downloadlink is for ubuntu.

So did I understands this correct then, that there are actually no cpu driver for this intel cpu. Maybe the intel components, 4 of them in windows update logg is maybe it?

Yes, you don't need graphics drivers for the Intel CPU since it doesn't have an iGPU. Pretty sure that Windows Update handles most things like microcode updates. You *can* leave it alone and it should be fine. Personally, I do manual driver updates including the Intel Management Engine Interface and LPC controller chipset driver but the majority of users don't need to do this at all... except for AMD CPUs and their chipset drivers, those should probably be updated periodically.

This is my understanding as well. From observation, on a fresh Windows 10 install, on the first or second boot (depending on network state and how long you're up after that first boot) Windows will get most relevant drivers including chipset ones (for AMD as well). They're usually a while behind current versions however and in AMDs case wont have any of the config software. Obviously none of this will happen without a network connection so you're left with the drivers bundled with the install in that case. I actually use this to my advantage on certain systems that require specific drivers.

If you're on very recently released hardware, 100% go get drivers by hand. You'll also *probably* want to update the GPU driver manually if you have a dedicated one. The release tempo is pretty quick and depending on what your system is being used for, it can be beneficial to stay somewhat current.

Ok. I updated the amd drivers and also installed inf driver and Intel Management Engine Interface. I installed driverbooster and uninstalled it with all it residues..I also like You said update nvidia manually, normally I keep it to the studio drivers as they are more throughly tested.

I tested a youtube vid which I often test motion..and it is better now.

Thank You both for good advice :D
