Gizmo Search
« on: June 30, 2024, 01:52:15 am »

I want to be able to sit near my hifi in the other room and dial up an Artist, track to play the track through DLNA which the equipment is perfectly capable of receiving.

If I want to find something to play I punch in Cult and I get a list of artists, tracks even album that contains the word. Then when I touch the artist to drill down I instead get a popup saying Play, Add (to playing now list) etc.

If I look for the Album I want to play I can see that (with no reference to the artist for that title), but if I touch that one - something else from the list plays not the album I have selected. Eg. Cult, then see "Love (Album)" in the list hit that one and I get the Blue Oyster Cult playing not The Cult.

I simplified your post so I could try to understand it.

I think you're using search to locate what you want.

Try Artists > The Cult
or
Albums > Love

It's also possible The Cult might be found under Artists > Cult if you've set MC to ignore articles like "The".

I find the Gizmo search is completely messed up if initiated after selecting a general view tab such as "Recently Added" or "Recently Played" (assuming you have defined such views or similar).  If you first select a "simple" tab such as "Artist" or "Year (release)", then go back to Search, Gizmo may do better.  I find it also has a tendency to shuffle tracks in the search result playlist, or play something that was not selected.  All of this is easily confirmed by looking under Playing Now on the server itself for the renderer targeted by Gizmo.

Other Android players apps for MC do far more reliable searches.  MO 4Media is very clean, with results being nicely grouped by type.  JRemote2 does OK, but results are not as clearly grouped by type.  The BubbleUPnP Android player does OK, dividing results into albums and tracks.  On the other hand, JRiver Panel struggles, providing long lists of tracks which I find pretty useless.

Sorry have not been back on the forum for a while... Thanks Jim. Sorry if it confuses as this is not really my point.

No question that I can find the right album I am looking for - but it can find a whole bunch of other stuff and play it without any feedback first. My point is Gizmo can find and start playing a play list without first seeing what it found and is compiling on the play list. There is no way to be sure it is what I am trying to find before the pop up that immediately starts playing. The search functionality in Gizmo is not a mature product more like an aged product that shows its limited function and it is an opportunity since it has not been updated in 7-8 years?

I agree. I've found it best to use Gizmo to play a playlist and ad-hoc searches for an album, artist or track are not practicable for all the reasons given in this thread. Therefore, I make as many playlists as possible for tracks I may want to play through Gizmo.
I wrote about this issue back in 2014: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,88682.msg608319.html#msg608319
GIZMO Search behaviour improvement suggestion
The search behavior in GIZMO is somewhat limited because the returned results can only be played, not browsed. For instance, if I search for ABBA the results returned will be the "artist" Abba and along with various Abba album titles but not Abba tracks unless the title of the track is included in the search term.

Selecting any of the items in the search results will display the "What would you like to do?" dialogue box, which essentially consists of different play options. What would be helpful is an additional option to browse the search results and to be able to drill down to track level in the same way the regular browse function works. That is, say, selecting one of the Album titles and then having the option to select a track from that album, rather than only being able to select and play the whole album.

That would make Search really helpful, especially in very large libraries, and where you may not be sure what track it is you want to play until you see the title. Of course the same thing could be achieved by not using Search and simply browsing by Artist name to the track list, but when you have over 6,000 Artists to page through such a search option described would make the process a whole lot easier and faster.
