Window positioning with Mac commands
« on: September 06, 2024, 07:56:31 am »

I've been using MC for mac since version 20.  I'm aware that it uses a toolkit for the OS that is not exactly the same as the way most Mac apps are developed.

I've recently starting using a Mac program that let's you easily position windows on the screen.  Like telling a window to be exactly half of the screen on the left.  Or maximized in height, but keeping the same width.  Things that are probably familiar to most windows 10 or 11 users.  This program adds similar functions to the Mac.  The one I use is called Rectangle Pro.

I've noticed that MC32 does not respond to most of these commands.  It will move, but will not change size.  It would be great if MC could do this.

How much work would it be to allow MC to honor window movement and size requests via the OS like other Mac apps do?

Thanks for reading.

Brian.

Not sure. It's a bit surprising it moves.
I suppose knowing what events it's being sent might help.

If I could easily help, I would try.  If there's anything I can do, please let me know.

If it's difficult to gather the data, I understand.  I was just asking.

I would heartily second the request. I don't know whether bigentry uses the same program. I am using BetterTouchTool.
Similarly there is the possibility to change easily between programs in full screen mode by switching with two finger
from left to right or vice versa using the magic mouse. Here, too, MC is the only program on my Mac that can't do that.

I'm using Rectangle Pro.  Rectangle (standard) is free and works almost identically to Rectangle Pro.   I say this in case anyone reading this wants to try Rectangle out on their Mac.  It's quite good.

Messed around with rectangle a bit. It resizes other windows, like the options window but the main UI window is a special beast.

Thanks for giving it a try.  In the grand scheme of MC it's probably not all that important.

Mac OS Sequoia has this kind of windows position as a new system feature.
If you drag a window to the upper side of the screen it fills the screen.
If you drag it to the left or right side it fills half the screen on that side and
you can position another window on the other side.
Regrettably that isn't working with MC but with all other programs I tried.
Is there a possibility to make it work with MC, too?
It's extremely useful if one wants to exchange data between to programs.

Yes, MacOS 15 has a "snap to" area feature kind of like Windows.  It's awkward and weird.  For me, the only real utility of Rectangle is the hot key support.  Using a hot key to snap a window to a position and resize it makes sense.  It's fast and is a single defined action.  Trying to find the snap target is a poor user experience.

It's not just dragging the window with the mouse to a corner, it's much more as I just have seen: if you are going with the mouse cursor onto the green button on the upper left side of a window you have much more possibilities to change the position of the program window.
Regrettably it doesn't work with MC.

On of the most ANNOYING "features" of windows. I hate it.

Moom is my window positioner of choice--most powerful one I know of!

Sadly, no. Moom also doesn’t work with MC’s custom window handling.

Is it planned that this will be changed in one of the next updates?

Just downloaded .25 but didn't see any difference in the windows management.
Is there some?

I meant the new Sequoia features for move and scale that you can see in the appended picture.
Plus tragging the program window to the left, right or upper side of the screen to position program side by side.
Or wipe with two finger from left to right of vice versa to chang between programs in fullscreen mode.

Sounds like you are referring to something else.
I'm referring to the thread above which is talking about the various window positioners like rectangle. Previously the main window would not respond to system resizing commands (though it did resopnd to system move commands).

I wouldn't expect anything specific for new sequoia features.

Maybe we're talking about different things. Maybe my English is also insufficient to explain what I mean.
I understand it's not the original question. But on the other side it's only slightly modified.
Sequoia has some VERY helpful new features regarding the windows/screen management. Something that
was on a Mac previously only available from third party programs.
And my question simply was whether this will be supported and taken over by JRiver in the future or not.
A simple question, not more.

bob - I think aliciaviola is referring to Apple copying a feature from Win11 in Sequoia and introducing similar window size and position choices when clicking on the maximise button in Apple apps like Safari and Finder.

I can remember Matt once ruled out introducing one of the MS window placement/sizing features in MC, I think it may have been the "Snap" feature but I do not remember anyone ever asking for MC to be modified to provide a choice of sizing/placement options when clicking on the MC maximise button in the Windows forums.

It's not restricted to the Apple apps. It works with nearly all programs on my MAC. Concerning Music it works for instance with WaveLab Pro 12, iZotope RX advanced 11, Fission. Save Fission none of them are new versions for Sequoia. Even EyeTV can handle that.

If you are working with Apple's magic mouse you can switch between several apps in full screen mode, if you swipe with two fingers from left to right or vice versa. Works with any program, but not with MC.

MC's standard view main UI buttons are NOT MacOS buttons. They maximize/minimize using MC UI functions. I don't know if this will ever change.

The window moving resizing apps like rectangle should now work as intended.

What a pity. It's such a useful feature. The MC UI functions make little sense on the Mac. They were not working like all other UIs on a Mac.

aliciaviola - There is a feature in MC on the Mac platform that does not exist on MC on the Windows Platform which with a bit of Manual Help makes incorporating some of that New Sequoia Only Feature a bit unnecessary.

To find out what this mysterious feature is with MC open, I tried it with the MC window occupying the whole of the screen between the Apple Header bar and the dock, click on the MC windows maximise button and you should spot that MC is doing the opposite off what you would expect it to do; because the MC Window will shrink to about 1/3rd of it's original size.
You can then use the handles/tools to move it anywhere on the screen as well as make it any size you like; Now for the fun/interesting bit, not only will MC remember how big that "smaller" window was it will also remember where it was positioned on the screen. When you want to get back to the Normal/Usual sized window all you have to do is click on the smaller MC Windows maximise button.

Thanks for the advice. It's better than nothing but far from what could be possible.
And - unlike Bob promised - it's not working with third party apps.
BetterTouchTool has a very useful window management, too (snap areas).
But it doesn't work with MC.

I fixed the resizing. The original report and my own experience with rectangle showed that moving was not an issue.
Does anyone ELSE have a report of moving with 3rd party tools not working?

Should it work already in .27? With BetterTouchTool Snap Areas there is no difference. Nor with the Mac tool.
