Why not add a toolbar?
« on: January 31, 2003, 10:42:46 am »

I had sworn off Media Center beta testing...  but the new work on Haristyles sucked me back in!  It looks great, by the way, but the bugs are almost too numerous to list.  Should I wait for a few releases before giving feedback?

Oh...  the reason I posted:  Why doesn't MC include a taskbar toolbar?  I'm talking about the same thing that WMP and nPlayer provide - kind of like the ulitmate in mini!  I find it especially useful for web radio.

On bugs, we know there are some in Hairstyle.  We meant to have another build out the next day, but we got side-tracked.  Hang in there until we get another one out and then fire away.

We may, but until then, just minimize to the system tray and use right-click.  It takes even less screen real estate then...

You know what idea popped into my head the instant I saw this post?

A drag and drop toolbar for converting.

It'd be the ULTIMATE converting tool. A toolbar that we could toggle on or off with targets saying:

wav     |    mp3    |    ogg    |    etc

and we could then go through the library and just drop songs on the toolbar and it would convert them (with an option to do so in the background).
This would then make going through the library converting different songs soooo easy and simple.

It'd make MJ stand out by miles above all the other packages for pure simplicity.

Thinking about it now though, this could be extended quite a lot. A toolbar purely for different targets would make MJ sooo perfect for management of everything.

It could contain a load of buttons like the one for favourites except that we could go down the list and choose devices (burner, portable, etc),  conversion formats (mp3, wav, ogg, etc) or playlists and set each one individually and it would say what it was set to (as oposed to the favourite button always saying favourite).

It'd be like the drop target but sooo much more powerful because we could have several of them - maybe 5 or 6 giving us instant access to whichever areas we individually found important.
Combine this with a button on the regular toolbar that toggles the drop target toolbar visible or not and it'd be an incredibly useful tool.

I think it really would throw you guys miles ahead of competitors in terms of quick management. We could browse through our library and quickly and easily just send a song to one of several locations.

A simple tool that I think would be amazing :)

Matt,

Well, the fundamental difference between using the systray (or a mini skin made to look like a toolbar - ala Caliber) is that a toolbar doesn't require that MC is running.

It's value is when you want to do something when MC isn't yet running.  Some would call it "eye-candy", but it does add a functionality.  I use (well, used, since MC) the nPlayer toolbar all the time.
