JRemote3 with Windows Server
« on: January 25, 2025, 10:49:32 pm »

I've been using JRiver Media Center for a few years now.  I love the sound quality and many of the features but I have a few issues.

I'm running Windows Server 2019 Standard as my file share & a Windows 10 Pro Workstation as my music player.  To protect the network, the Windows 10 Pro computer has no Internet access.  I use Kodi as my player for video files and I have no issues with it.

I have over 21,000 files in my library but there are no limits listed in the description of the program.

1)  Gizmo Remote - If I have more than a few hundred items in my playlist it won't allow me to even look at the playlist.  I created a playlist with only a couple of hundred items and it works fine.

2)  Even though my remote computer has administrator rights to my server it will not update the tags on the server.  To work around this I installed MC33 on my server and spent days correcting the library then I used the Update Tags (From Library) function to save the changes.  It went thru them all and then report 21,000+ files updated with no errors.  Then I imported the files into the library on my music player with only "update for external changes enabled".  Many of the files were not right and when I selected Update Library (From Tags) nothing changed.

3)  It was with great anticipation I paid for and downloaded JRemote3.  I have copied my issues with it here.  When I use the term server I'm speaking of the music player in the context of server and remote.  I have attached the pictures as well:

In order to keep things organized I'm using the function on the server to sort the playlist by Artist, Album & Track.  When I add another song or album by a particular artist it puts it in order by those criteria.  Unfortunately the remote doesn't look at that sort list and just tacks any added music to the end of the playlist making it very hard to find things.  Yes I can use the find option to look for a song or artist but say I want to turn off shuffle and play all the songs I have by a particular artist.  If I select it on the server it does exactly that.  If I select it on the remote it will just play the songs in the order I added them.  I have attached pictures.  If I select it on the server it will play all the AC/DC songs in a row but if I select it on the remote it will play the a-ha song between them.  The playlist on the remote needs to sync with the one on the server.  I looked but I was unable to find a setting for that.  If I missed it please let me know.

Windows Media Player offers the same sound quality and there is a remote for it that works well.  It syncs with the WMP playlist no matter how large it is.  The problem is the remote requires connection to the Amazon App Store.  This is why I went to JRiver Media Center.

Windows Server isn't supported.

Having no Internet Access may cause problems.

21,000 files isn't a problem.  Nor is 210,000.

JRemote3 adds files to the end of the playlist as it sees it.

If you think you have found a bug, please post steps to reproduce it.  Posting multiple problems in the same thread won't help.

You do realize that I paid for this program and all of the upgrades?  I also paid for JRemote3.  This not a free project like Linux Mint where we rely on each other to figure things out.  The fact that we have to post to a forum and then weed through the posts that don't actually address the issue is very frustrating.  I find it interesting that no one has offered to help with my issues yet you were quick to point out all the problems with my post.  Do you work for JRiver?  Is there anyone from JRiver on this forum?

Windows Server - This was only being used as a file server much like a NAS box.  In reading through some of the posts many people with NAS boxes are having the same issue.  Even though they have given the workstation full admin access it still won't write the Tags.  It's interesting that you jump right to we don't support Windows Server yet MC33 runs fine on it and I can save the Tags to the local drive.  Are you saying that I have to load all the files I want to use on the local computer for this to work?

Internet access - In one post I was reading about someone that was trying to stream from his server through the Internet to his remote and it didn't work.  He was told that doing so would open his system to security issues.  So once the player is setup what would the harm be in turning off the gateway access to the player computer?  Especially on Windows 10 computers that will loose security updates starting in October.  Or are you one of those who think like Microsoft and we should all go out and buy new computers so we can run a supported version of Windows 11?

210,000 Files - I have repeatedly brought up the issues with the Gizmo Remote software.  I have a Beatles Playlist that has a couple of hundred songs and the little Icon that allows me to go to the playlist shows up in Gizmo.  My Full Playlist has around 9,000 songs on it and that Playlist Icon does not appear when accessing it in Gizmo.  Oh....The playlists that do show up in Gizmo are sorted by the same criteria as the Playlist on the Player.

JRemote3 - You said I should share the bugs in the software.  Well I did complete with attachments showing the issue.  Your response was well that's just the way it is.  I have tested several remotes on other programs and they all sort the files on the  remote the same as the playlist on the player.

None of my concerns really matter and nothing is going to change except I will not be using this program anymore.

I think you misunderstood what I said there in that other topic. If you use it locally, meaning within your own local area network there's really no security risk allowing the Windows 10 PC to have internet access (in fact it's imperative so it gets Defender and security updates, at least until October). What is a potential security risk is forwarding ports in order to access your library outside your local network. As long as it's used locally and no ports forwarded allowing any outside access, it's fine to have it connected to the internet. In fact, when using remotes like JRemote, Panel, etc. you actually should have internet access on the server running MC for best results because it'll need some sort of internet connection for the access key support to work, for example. It's also fine to use Windows 10, at least until October like you mentioned. Then you'll have to figure out your next move there once support ends.

Gizmo hasn't been updated in years, and seeing how Panel and JRemote for iOS and JRemote3 for Android are a thing, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if there's any updates to it unless a future Android update breaks something. I also wouldn't be surprised if things don't work on newer Android versions. Otherwise, it *should* still work, albeit with issues. It's honestly probably a little pointless to report Gizmo issues, at least that's how it seems to be these days. JRemote3 on the other hand is in active development at least.

JRemote3 - You said I should share the bugs in the software.  Well I did complete with attachments showing the issue.  Your response was well that's just the way it is.  I have tested several remotes on other programs and they all sort the files on the  remote the same as the playlist on the player.

I think you should start a topic in the Remotes section of the forum with a list of your JRemote3 issues, hopefully with steps to reproduce too just in case it's hard to reproduce them. JRemote3 had a lot of changes under the hood, so there is bound to be issues like this. As long as they're in a place where Hendrik can see them and then hopefully reproduce them, he can hopefully fix them.

The issue with the playlist order was already posted over in the JRemote3 thread, and I answered it there. Please do try to keep your feedback/questions in one spot.
