How to delete missing files from the library
« on: February 16, 2025, 12:20:29 pm »

I have a ton of missing files in my library and want to remove those ones

These are the instructions below, but see the attached  screenshot.

There is no option to "and then select the option to "Delete Missing Files" from the dialog box that appears;"

I am on V 31.Is it somewhere else in my version?

To clear missing files from JRiver Media Center, navigate to "Tools" > "Library Tools" > "Rename, Move, & Copy Files" and then select the option to "Delete Missing Files" from the dialog box that appears; this will scan your library and remove any entries that point to files that no longer exist on your computer.

Key points:

Access the tool: Go to "Tools" > "Library Tools" > "Rename, Move, & Copy Files".

Select the action: Within the "Rename, Move, & Copy Files" window, choose the "Delete Missing Files" option.

Confirmation: JRiver will scan your library and prompt you to confirm before deleting any entries for missing files.

That option hasn't been in that dialog for many years, if it ever was. Where did you read that?

You can clear your missing files in several ways:
- just do an Auto-Import. Missing files should be removed from the library.
- open Playlists > Smartlists > Audio--Task--MissingFiles (it may take a while to open if your collection is large). Then select all files there and delete them.

Maybe do a Library Backup before doing this.

Thank you

It was from Google AI

Is "auto import" like scanning/adding my library as I did the 1st time? Like starting over?

That took maybe double-digit hours, I would rather not do that if possible.

I sussed a way tho, not the best I admit

I went to the folder with doubles and missing files (performed in JRiver) and deleted them from the library and hard drive, then added the folder again as I have all my music backed up. It can be cumbersome, but I suspect that a complete library scan would take as many hours as it did the 1st time.

Should I start a new thread to ask another, as follows the question here?

JRiver is clearly the audiophile bitrate king, but I wonder if can it do a few other things that other apps do(Don`t even get me started on how it is the best for hi-res movies, isos, ATMOS, etc.Menu,s and all. Cannot be touched)

IE Something I really love in IE Plexamp is when I am listening to an album, below that will be similar &  related artists and genres from my library.I have no idea how they do that, but it is a sweet touch

Cheers for all your help mate

Google AI can't read  ::)

AutoImport will rescan your folders and just process new/changed/moved/missing files. It's usually fast, unless all your files are changed/re-tagged by a 3rd party software (in that case they would all be detected as "changed" and re-imported).

AutoImport is the normal way to add new files and process changes to the library.

Cheers mate

I took your fine advice and it only took 30:37.WOW

Please see the report below

library now has 261698 files. Search and update took 30:37.

Imported 159 new files.
Fixed 54437 broken links. (0 fixed, 54437 removed)
Updated 6640 files that had external changes.
Failed to import 20 files.
Skipped 6609 files (previously determined to be bad).

I am not sure what some of that means, and some concerns me

Of the "54437 removed" Can I assume that those were the missing files that brought me here to ask about in 1st place?

Failed to import 20 files." Should that be a concern? I have to wonder what those are and why they failed?

"Skipped 6609 files (previously determined to be bad)."

That really concerns me. So there are still "bad" files in my library? And which are they and how do I deal with them?

The full imported report is way too long to share here, but I looked it over and it does not report on which files are the concerns, only the successes

Can I and should I try to deal with those problems?

Cheers mate

Yes.

Type this into the search box to see the list of 6609 files tracked by MC in its Bad database:
~d=b

You can then check those files outside of MC - they may be corrupt, incomplete, truncated or otherwise unsupported by MC. If you remove the files from the Bad database and re-run autoImport, MC will try to import them again - HOWEVER, note that MC may crash while trying to import a bad file! If you want to try this I suggest you first backup the database.

Yes, that's the box. Try it on the Audio->Files view, which shows the individual files with their paths.
Also, press ENTER afterwards :) The count below should show "6609 files" or close.

OK, weird. Maybe those 6609 files were already removed as part of the "missing" ones. Check with ~d=r

Another possibility is that they're not Audio files. Try ~d=b in Video->Files and Image->Files as well.

Well the "~d=r" gave these results in file search

Nowhere near 6609,but something at least

Some of the files actually play tho and no errors

But the ones that don't play say "no files selected",so I assume we/YOU are onto something?

~d=r shows the "removed" files, ie, files you manually deleted in MC but not necessarily on disk. They may be duplicates, for instance. If you delete them there and then run AutoImport, they will be reimported as normal files.

Check the ~d=b on the Video and Image sections.

If nothing is there, then you can enable Help->Logging and do another AutoImport, then check the log file to find which files are considered bad. The log will be huge though - don't forget to turn Logging off afterwards.

As I did the last import with logging on I had the last window opened and I see files being removed(From view at least) and assume they are some of the problem files

That scan only took 10m 24 seconds for some reason

Nice

Now where is that report mate?

Do I click "Details" I assume yes,but don't wanna mess this up

The ext report says

Imported 168 new files

Updated 17 files that had external changes

BUT I have not did any changes since the last scan an hr or so ago :)

OK mate I did that and clicked details

It was way smaller than any other scan I ever did

It only mentions successful imports and Updates

No mentions of any errors, but there were errors
