iPod questions/thoughts
« on: December 31, 2002, 06:34:08 pm »

okay so I have been playing with the iPod plugin for some time.  A few questions and thoughts:

1.  Is it possible to tag files to be added to the ipod on next attach?  I often find myself thinking I want a file on my iPod, but not having my iPod connected at that exact time.

2.  What does rebuild database from iPod do?  Will it actually import files from the ipod to your local hard drive?

3.  This questions is more of a how usefull would something be, if there is a way to do this already please tell me :).. I would love the ability to tag a song on my ipod while listening to it, and then have that show up when I sync.  I often listen through music that has been encoded or downloaded to make sure it is good before it is put into my libarary.  This would make that process easier.

4.  Does the iPod keep track of music listening stats?  If so can that data be brought back into MC?

5.  Is the only way to get a song to show up in multiple playlists to select all those playlists?   I currently use a playlist to determine what goes onto the ipod.  (problem is I have an iPod playlist all the time).  However those songs are part of other playlists.  I would like to have the other playlists listed even though not all the songs are in them.  I use some of this to catorgize listening types.  To much to import the whole playlist, but I might have songs from half of it, so it is still a good way for me to grab music groups to play...

6.  Is there a way to downsize/convert files during the sync process?  ie set everything to 128 mp3s or something of the such?  I thought there was a way, but can't find it now...

Okay thats it for now, good work, keep it up.

Matthew,

Thanks for the comments.

1) This is possible, we might be able to add it in.

2) This will rebuild the iPod database file from the existing files on iPod. This is useful if the database files gets corrupted so that the files cannot be seen. It will not import the files, although if that is what you want to do, you can right click on the files and select "Send-to PC"

3) There is not currently a way to do this, sorry.

4) No, as far as I can tell information such as the number of times a track has played is not recorded by iPod.

5) I am not sure I follow. If you are synching and you have files in multiple playlists, your files will show up in all the playlists. If you have files on iPod and you want to add them to additional playlists, right click and select "Add to Playlist".

6) Yes. Before you click "Upload" to send tracks to iPod, click on "Options" and you will see the various options for file conversions.

Thanks,

Steve

On #1, just creat a playlist called "Ipod" and when you have a song you eventually want on your ipod, add it to the playlist.  When you are ready to transfer to the ipod, just send or synch this playlist to the ipod.

Someone on ipodlounge.com said that the reason to get MC 9 rather than just MJ 8 (since I don't really need all the other image/video, etc. mgmt) is because MC 9 will let you *sync* the iPod. Currently, I just manually copy songs/albums over to the iPod. How do I sync?

I'd like to do this 'cause a) it'd be faster and b) I want to fix some stuff that has already gone over -- add tags that were missing, convert to VBR format 'cause the first few I did at 256 and they don't need to be that big, etc.

Thanks.

I had understood that the iPod does record the number of times a song has been played, and will update iTunes with this figure on synchronization.

That way, the iTunes 'Played count' has a more accurate reflection of the number of times the song has been played on both the host machine, and remotely on the iPod.

This would be a great feature to add - I think Joe Masters may know how this is being done on the iPod.

I found a thread on this on one of the iPod boards.  Can' t remember witch one now.

There is a file called Play Counts in \iPod_Control\iTunes  On the WinPod this never gets updated.  The theory is that Apple doesn't update as they don't want the file to fill up on them.  From what I have read this might come back in the next firmware release.

Hope that clarifys :)

To clarify.  I have a song in 5 playlists.  However when I sync with my iPod I am using a playlist called iPod, not selecting any other playlists.  After this sync is done I only have on playlist on my iPod.  I would like all 6.  The iPod one + the 5 unique ones the song is a part of.  Does that make sense?

I don't see this as a valid button when using sync mode, and not upload mode.  Is this available here?

It might be nice to have this option on a playlist setting rather than the whole job.

Thanks,

Sync Process Question
« Reply #8 on: January 02, 2003, 05:47:31 pm »

Would it be possible to get some sort of report of files existing on the iPod and not on your PC?  This way you could choose to import those not found to your local PC if you so choose to do so.

Matthew,

When you synch, select all five playlists that you want to synch and I think you will be all set.

The option for conversion only can be set when uploading, not on synch.

If you click on the iPod drive letter, you can see all the files on iPod. When you say you would like a report,  what would you like to see?

Everyone,

Regarding the playcount, updating on the iPod, this file does not get updated as far as i can tell when using a Windows formatted iPod. This works differently(correctly) with iTunes and a Mac formatted iPod. Not much I can do until a firmware update.

But I don't want everything in the playlist, just the songs that are in the iPod list.  Some playlists have 10gigs of music in it, and I don't want the whole thing, however I do want to be able to display the files from that playlist that exist on the iPod.  Hope that makes sense :)

Will this be an option in the future?

I would like to have the option to sync my iPod back to my desktop.  So if I add files to it at work and then go home my home machine can get those files added to it.  If I got a report of the differences I could do it manually.  During the sync would be much better :)
