Hi

I use the fairly standard naming convention for my ripped CD's (Artist - Album - Track# - Title.mp3) which I save in the following directory: C:\myDocuments\myMusic\artsit\album\
What convention do you guys use for individual songs that have been downloaded and are not from a particular album? (i.e. they don't fit into any of the artist's album folders) Would you create a "various" folder such as C:\myDocuments\myMusic\artsit\various\ ?

I realise this is a basic question but I'm just trying to completely organize my music collection before I upload everything to iPod.
Media Center is awesome software and it's a great credit to you guys. Adam you've also done a top job in putting the iPod Help File together - it's certainly been very useful.

My own scheme has Genre as the base, like so:
Genre>Artist>Album

For singles I make a sub-folder in each Genre named 'Assorted', and I just name them by Artist - Title.

Mine is:

for cuts, singles, albums (mono-artist):

\music\artist\[artist]\{album}\[artist] {album} track# - name

if there is no album, the filename is - according this name convention:

\music\artist\[artist]\{}\[artist] {} track# - name



for a compilation (various artist):

\music\compil\{album}/[artist] {album} track# - name

if there is no artist, the filename is - according this name convention:

\music\compil\{album}/[] {album} track# - name


Anyway, file naming convention is not very important as you can rename (and move) your files at anytime with MJ 'rename file from properties' funtion.

Now that i don't Use CDDB I Use:

Artist - Album - Track# - Title

I just stuff all the loose tracks in cathegory directories, like "Pop-disco-dance", "Rock" and so on, all under the directory "g:\single tracks", to traslate it from norwegian. Works fine for me.

I'm not sure what MC does if you use an empty field in the directory part of the name specifier, I have to give it a go. What I want to use is:

D:\Media\Music\[ARTIST]\[ALBUM]\[TRACK#] - [NAME] - [ARTIST].mp3

In the case where [ALBUM] is not known, I want it to use "(unassigned)". And if when retagging files a property value is seen to be "(unassigned)" it should instead be left blank.

For complete albums, I use My Documents\My Music\Complete Albums\Artist\Album\Artist - Title

For singles, I just use My Documents\My Music\Singles\ followed by a letter of the alphabet that corresponds to the first letter of the Artist (not counting "The").

I really don't care about genre that much when it comes to music, and I only use MJ to play, and it keeps track of all the track numbers and all that. I never really understood why I would need all of the tag information as part of the filename when I use a jukebox app that keeps track of all that for me.

I mean, when it comes right down to it, you could just throw every song into one giant directory (barring any filesystem limitations) and give them all just a bunch of gibberish for names, and you could still see a nice a neatly organized music collection within MJ.

It's all about the tags, baby. Filenames were really only important way back in the early days of Winamp 2 and Sonique, and even they would read some tag info.

for single artists albums:
Music/(Artist)/(Album)/Artist - Name
exemple : Rolling Stones/Goat's Head Soup/Rolling Stones - Winter.ape

for Various Artist Albums :
Music/Various Folks Albums/(Album)/Artist - Name
exemple : Various Foks/Best of Jazz/Miles Davis - So What.ape

for single tracks two cases
Case 1 artist already has an album:
Music/(Artist)/Tracks/artist - tracknname
exemple : Rolling Stones/Tracks/Rolling Stones - Angie accoustic demo.mp3

Case 2 artist has only one track in the library :
Music/Various Folks/(genre)/artist - trackname
exemple: Various Folks/Zouk/Tati Marlen - y'a ka zouké.mpc

plus when I have  more than 5 isolated tracks from the same artist normally stored in (various folks/genre) then the lucky one get promotted with the creation of a special directory for this artist with a default album name of Tracks. (artist/Tracks/)

Now let's talk about Bruce Springsteen. In 1998 he realesed a four CD album named 'Tracks', damned ! What I did was to name this particular album 'Bruce Springsteen Tracks' since I alsoihave some isolated tracks for The Boss hence a Tracks directory.
