Sorting Question
« on: October 12, 2002, 05:57:15 am »

The new DB features are really starting to shape up!!  :)

I'm now able to create a new Artist(Sort) field that I can populate with an Artist's Last Name, First Name.

However, when I create a view scheme, there doesn't seem to be a way to sort on a field without viewing it. In other words, I'd like the sort value to be Artist(Sort), but I want to see the Artist/Album fields when viewing. Similar to sorting a pull-down list by record ID instead of the value.

Is it possible to sort by a field without viewing the field? If not, this would be a valuable new feature...

In the tree, no.  It sorts by what it shows.

However, you should be able to set up any sorting you want in the right view.

Were you hoping to sort the tree or the right view?

Thanks.

I think the one feature I would really like now in terms of sorting is to have different sorts in the left hand pane for Audio/Video & Image.  For example all my audio tracks I would like the fields to read Track No/Artist/Name/Album/Time/Year/Bitrate etc. but for images at least 4 of these are irrelevant.  For that I would like Album/Sub Album(custom field)/Name/Height/Width etc and then for video probably Name/Time/Album/Height/Width.  Is it possible to do this and I'm just missing it or is this somethig that could be added.  I know it has been requested b4 but wasn't sure if it had been implemented.

Cheers

Tree view. This is the most important sort for me since it is the initial starting point. I've got 50, 000 files and only half-way through my CD's and I have a few thousand LP's I'm going to start on next. It's nice and all that I can sort the Content view, but I can't group the sort in the content view the way the tree view does. This allows me to scan content quickly.

Am I missing something? Is there a way to group the content view with a header between groupings? This would help a lot.

I realize that I can search/filter etc. But I don't necessarily have any preconcieved notions of what I want to listen to...

Thanks!

Just noticed this thread. I posted in the preview thread about this also.

Year sorting in the tree would be nice to include as well. Some of the albums I have are from the same artist but different years.

Example:
Jeff Beck - Who Else! Year 1999
Jeff Beck - Wired. Year 1976

MJ gives alphabetical precedence in the tree view. No way to order this by the sorting commands set up for the list?

I just realised that my post above should have said the right pane.  I want different views for Audio/Video/Images in the right pane.  I dont want to see the fields unrelated to images when I am looking at images and the same for audio.  Is this possible and can MJ be made to remember these views??

Quisp, I've been trying to find a way to achieve the same thing you are with sorting. I thought I'd be smart and use the "album artist" field as my sorting field for artists with last name first, but ran into a problem. I thought that if I set up a view scheme by "album artist" it would display the reversed ("last, first") artist names that are in the "album artist" field while simply displaying the normal "artist" tags for any files that didn't have an "album artist" value. This would allow my track info pages and such to still display the artist name in normal form while allowing the precise sorting needed in the tree view. It didn't work out this way, though, as the view scheme continued to show just the "artist" fields.

By the way, I'm using 9.0.87 which has the new "album artist (auto)" field. What exactly does this do compared to the old MJ 8's plain "album artist"?

I would really love a way to sort as you requested for both artist names with last name first and bands with "the" in front, while still only seeing normally-formatted artist names.
