Libraries in v9
« on: September 20, 2002, 02:03:02 am »

Ok, I've tried using Libraries a few times in v8 and for the life of me I've always given up on them. i could never work them out or seem to get them to work.
Sure I could read the help file but I dont want to and I'm sure most users dont really want to be delving into the help file when trying to use a feature on a program.

This is what I imagine the Libraries do: Let us store different collections of files so that we can deal with different collections at a time rather than just all of them at once.

When I create a new library in MJ8 I've never managed to successfully unload it, it always tells me it's in use, I cant work out how to enable one or disable another easily, etc etc.

Also, changing between libraries is a 3 or 4 click process which is fairly long winded.

Especially with the introduction of image support in v9 I would be using libraries to store all my images in one library and all my audio files in another. I would then want to swap between them relatively easily. Just by choosing say: Full Collection, My Music, or my Music Video's or My holliday photos (the library names I'd use) from a drop down list and then be able to use that library instantly. Preferably with a library manager that was a little more intuitive. Instead of right now where it says: Cannot unload library as it is in use or something, give me a message saying: Cannot unload as it's in use, to stop using it do such and such. Or: Cannot unload as it's in use, would you like to disable it's use and unload it now?

Just something that helped me when it told me it couldn't be done rather than just said I cant do it.

Make sure you're creating them in different directories.

After that, it's one click in the File->Library menu to switch.

What do you mean about seperate directories??
Also, you should program t his into MJ itself because I didn't know about it and there's probably a lot of other users who dont.

Under library setup, you can specify a directory.  This is where your data files are stored.

Did you try MJ Help?

MJ sets up a library by default without bothering the user with the details.

If you want to start using multiple libraries then that's more advanced. You shouldn't expect that you won't have to read the help file for the more advanced features. Reading the help is certainly easier and less time consuming than posting in here about it.

It's really pretty easy, though. You can't not have a library loaded, so before you can delete a library (I'm assuming that's what you're trying to do because there is no unload button that I can find), then you have to load a different one first.

Each Library has to have it's own folder, otherwise you'll wind up with multiple libraries that are all the same, because they'll all be using the same database file.

Like Matt said, once you create multiple libraries, switching between them is easy. You go to Library under File, and choose which one you want from the Cascading menu. 2 clicks and you're done.

I think you took it wrong when i said I didn't want to read the help file.
I wasn't saying it to say 'look at me I'm so great'. It was more just a case of pointing out I dont think most people use the help file to try to work out day to day functions of a piece of software.
I know I've never used windows help file to try to work it out.
When I used EAC or any other software too I never used the helpfile to work out how to use them.

I was mearly trying to make the point that I dont think most users are going to want to have to be looking up features in the help file to try and use them.
I know I dont and I know none of my friends do.

Neither do I.

I just managed to figure out libraries and most other MJ functions from playing around with it. Those I didn't I checked the helpfile on, and if I still couldn't figure it out, I tried here.

I just find it's generally faster to get my answers that way. Because as fast as everybody generally is in here, the helpfile is still faster. Especially when I suddenly decide that I just HAVE to redo everything a different way at 2am even though I know I should have been in bed 2 hours ago. :P

Interact is pretty dead at that time.

Why do MJ libraries have to be in different directories?
When I used to use MM I had all my libraries in one folder called 'MM Libraries', they all had different names after all.
This did my head in when I first changed to MJ but I let it go in the end, so I know where Nila is coming from.

An MJ Library consists of 5 files. So it can get rather tricky (I'd imagine) to try and keep seperate libraries all seperate in one folder.

I have a folder called "MJ\Database" and then under that I have a seperate folder for each library, where each folder is the name of that library.

An idea I just had: :)
yes, it happens every once in a blue moon.
This would solve this problem totally and make it a lot simpler for the user.
When prompting the user for a file name for the library, dont create the file that was specified, instead create a folder with the name specified and then just put all the library files into that.
That way they could just have one folder as Doof does that they store their library files in and MJ would automatically create the sub directories for them :)

Yo - And I just wanna say hi matt as according to the info this on the bottom of this bb - your online now so hey, wazzup :)
