Error restoring licence
« on: December 01, 2003, 12:26:06 am »

OK as someone with multiple PC's and the habit of rebuilding my HTPC every couple of months I am always pretty paranoid about the restore / registration limitations.  As such I generally use a disk imaging tool to rebuild my HTPC to OS and registered MC9.

Well I had need to totally rebuild my HTPC from scratch last week and used a restore to reg it and save the mjr file... Figured now would be a smart time to put MC9 on my laptops and the libretto I am using as a CarPC just in case I needed it later but...

I installed MC9... Install Licence... Install from regfile... Point it to the regfile I downloaded yesterday and get "Error Restoring Media Centre License:: License file past expiration date" the webpage and email I got both stated 14 days to install on multiple machines...

What gives ?? Please dont say I am going to have to waste another restore ??

BTW... Been away from interact for a bit and boy haven't you guys been busy !! the new skins and layout is such and improvement.. Hairstyle nearly works :P the whole thing looks MUCH slicker... Well done !!

Sounds obvious but since you didn't mention it have you checked the date on your pc?

The whole restoring license thing which is a piracy stumbing block, is pretty stinking anoying and aggrivating to the legit owners of MC. I too constantly (re)building up my PC and being disabled an on a (very) fixed income, the time is far between the ability to afford the required upgrades. I like how MJ7 worked. You made a backup, put it on a floppy. Needed to do a reinstall? Put your floppy in, turn on MJ, hit restore license in it, an boom you're ready. I think that the great minds that created MJ & now MC, could devise a better anti-piracy, more owner friendly licensing system.

Get busy! LOL

I am thinking of a solution, $$!!

When you install MC the first on january ,you have the free 30 days trial.
So ,let say you do not need to restore your licence before this 30 days.

We are now first of february.==one restore

Let say, you keep this install until 15 th of february.
From this day ,you start a new 30 days trial.
We are now 15th of mars == 2 restore.
2 months and a half already.
8 restore left to install AFTER the 30 days free trial.
Means you have 240 days of free trial if you use your 8 restore.

So 240 days +75 days [ 1st of januar to 15 th of mars] ===295 days.
there is 25 days left ===you have to keep any of your 8 remaining restore 3 days and few hours before reformating.

Does it look THAT bad?

Yes , the licence on the floppy was quite cool ,i agree...

But the restore are not as much evil than many say

Nila, You noticed  :-* been busy with other projects... WOW hasn't 9.1 come a long way...

Zevele,

Except I have 1 HTPC, one Desktop PC with 3 Win Partitions (I think MC is on 2 of them) One RAID server (dont think MC is on that actually its just file server) one laptop, one subNote / libretto which is doing double duty as a CarPC...

Then take into consideration that my HTPC get rebuilt at least 4 times a year and sometimes test or dev builds dont make it past a week or two.

Put that (admittedly unusual) usage pattern together and the lifespan of 10 restores does not seem that much...

My bigger problem was what do you do about a not online PC ?? My ISP was choking on the rover.jriver.com reg server so I simply could not generate a key ?? While I could use my laptop to get a key via another ISP my whole home net is wired up to use the DSL system.

I too strongly prefer SW that has a key or system that allows for offline registration.  That said I remember a post by Jim a long time back showing false reg attempts and crack attempts over a 2 hour period.. I would rather J River stayed in biz than anything else :D
