Request for Expanded Portable Drives Functionality
« on: December 04, 2003, 07:58:53 pm »

Ok.  I posed a similar question in another thread related to the portable drives plug-in.  I have several firewire and USB 2.0 disk drives that Windows XP recognizes as "Hard Drives" rather than "Devices with Removable Storage" which devices like the iPod appear as.

The firewire and USB 2.0 drives are essentially used as removable storage but are not available as handheld devices to synchronize with.  I tried changing the volume label on the drive and the plug-in to match, but no luck with devices seen by XP as fixed hard drives.

Is there anyway to provide a way to configure the plugin to recognize any drive (removable, fixed, networked) simply by label.  Ideally a dialogue to specify a list of valid removable media volume labels would be ideal.  This way I could sync my collection to a network drive (converting from APE to MP3 or OGG on the way) so I could play my collection from a device like the AudioTron or my new Roku HD1000.

Hope I am being clear.  Thanks.

Gautam,

If you have a fixed drive that you want MC to recognize under CD, DVD and Handhelds, go to Tools->Plugin Manager->Handheld->Portable Drives->Configure and enter the Volume Label of the drive you want MC to detect. The drive should then appear when you refresh the tree.

Steve,

I tried this several times to no avail.  I ensure that the drive's volume label and the volume label in the plug-in are the same, but nothing happens.  I even made sure I was case sensitive.  Any ideas on how I can narrow down the problem?

Gautum,

Today I fixed a bug with Fixed Drive portable player detection which a user reported after a synchronization procedure. I am pretty sure this will solve your problem as well. It will be available in the next build of MC 10.

Oops, forgot to post that I had gotten i to work. Duh.

I do have two feature requests:

- Ability to drag and drop to device and retain folder structure

- Ability to sync files between computer and device

Of course, these may already be there. There are so many (wonderful) features!

- Ability to drag and drop to device and retain folder structure

Try right-clicking on your drive letter and explore the option for 'Rearrange Upload folders' which will dynamically create folders on your player based on tag info.

- Ability to sync files between computer and device

Right click and select 'Synchronize' or click on the portable icon at the bottom of MC (to the right of the little rip and burn icons).

My lord, the features run amock!!!

Great great program! As soon as beta 10 is final, I'm going to happily purchase!

Great work. Have you talked to people like iRiver about packaging this software with their products?

Will this update be made available on the plugins page for those of us still using 9.1.x?

John,

Eventually, but not immediately.

Eventually, but not immediately.

That's OK.

Any chance it can also be updated so it will work if you enter the volume label of a mapped network drive?  That way I could synchronize the music on my laptop with my desktop without messing with Windows synchronization stuff...

Steve,

I take it that the fix was not incorporated in version 10.0.11.  If it was... I still have the problem, only my DVD and CD drives show up (my iPod shows up too when attached).  Matching the plug-in volume name and the volume name of a drive on my system doesn't help make the device visible (except under "My Computer" in MC).

Thanks for the effort.

Geez!  I had a inspiring moment and thought maybe having a NTFS file system on my portable drives was the problem, so I reformatted a drive to FAT32 and it appeared in MC!  Then I noticed the volume label was autoconverted to all caps during the reformat.  So I renamed a NTFS drive (drive C) in an all caps version of the name in the plugin and it appeared.  Thanks for the work.
