It generates very frequent peaks on 100% approx every 4 sec?

Have I missed something.

try going into Options -->> Device -->> Media Insert Action;
set to 'Nothing' and uncheck the 'Ask Everytime' . . see if that helps MC may be polling your CD drives.

bde. yes, it has been reported that MC stores certain items in a very inefficient manner that effects both storage and access times negatively. I thought that was picture and artist bio information.  Are you saying even a long playlist bring MC to its knees? How big was the playlist?

I was a little suprised to see the cpu load...

I learned that playlists above 2000 songs are not the way to go


I noticed

approx 100 2-5% load
approx 1000 30-40% load
approx 2000 60-95% load

2000 songs @ an average of 3 minutes per track is 6000 minutes of continuous play time.

That's 100 hours or 4.167 days.

Don't you guys ever sleep, or do you just listen to music 24/7?

Remember MC 9.0?; 6275 songs in playlist, (476 hours- about 19 days), 7% CPU at idle and 25-30% when playing.

I was about to post a message asking if anyone notices MC making the whole compute "sluggish"?

My computer has become sluggish in the past few days, I wonder if it's MC or something else?

I notice audio glitches and other slowness.

when was the last time you did some system maintenance?

I know it sounds basic, but have you run your anti virus and anti adware (Adware and/or Spybot) lately? Cleaned out your temp files etc...? Defragged your HDs ? Got anything running in the background?

Tried LisaRCT's suggestion and it worked for me CPU usage is way down. (<10% when playing). In addition, to make MediaCenter start faster I:

- uninstalled/deleted skins
- uinstalled/deleted plugins I wasn't using
- Stopped the splashscreen from appearing
- Switched off automated checking for software updates
- Switched off automatic checking of harddisk for new music/audio files

Not all of the above may be necessary, but it has certainly speeded things up for me.

Update: My posting relates for media center v9.1. Sorry not v10, which the original posting seems to be about.

Hi folks,

I'm equally concerned with the performance problem in MC v10.  The engine is definitely having some issues.  I've posted a couple of messages on this aspect

a) I have 7860 songs in my main PC server.  The MC response is very poor, and MC spends alot of time updating WINDOW ACTIOn.  

b) I only notice poor performance in v9 when MC tries to access my CD, when I try to access external devices.   But in v10, it is also very slow in the media library access.

c) When I use MC from a notebook, and and connect to the media server, the notebook performs well.  However, my notebook does not have a CD.  

d) It appears that MC hangs up when UPDATING ACTION WINDOW.  For the notebook, with no CD drive, it is very fast.  The server with CDRW drives, it is very slow.

c) I also use MC v10 on a notebook.  It has about 650 titles, with no CDs.  It runs very well.

Very good suggestions, but they have all been done, I do it all on a regular basis.

Not to say the problem is MC yet, there is still more things to watch for on my pc, and this is beta software, so it could be the cause or something unrelated slowing MC down.

I may go back to an old version to see if I can tell any difference.

Since the system hit is confimed by several long term users here, it is probably best to wait before loading up the database with too much stuff.  I am sure in later versions they'll figure out a way to prevent our systems from slowing down when running large databases.  I wish they would concetrate on performance and qualtity of sound issues rather than new features and changes to the 'click-maze'.  Who would have thought these 2-3Ghz system could have been brought to its knees by poorly designed data structures.
