Duplicates and playlists
« on: January 19, 2004, 11:00:50 am »

Hi.
As mentioned in an earlier thread, I find I have several songs/files that appear in different settings, like on single, on an album, on compilation albums and so on. Now I'm curious if anybody else have solved this 'problem' in one way or the other - I mean, wouldn't it be ideal to have just one version of each song, and some sort of pointer to this file when opening an album? (Sorry, this didn't come out sounding like I'd planned it to. Far from.) Or perhaps the best solution would be replacing albums with playlists, but I suppose most of us keep the original album tracking in the right pane view-field, or what? Hope some of you got my point . . . .

If I am underatanding you want the ability for virtual albums...

Example.
Rolling Stones, Time is on my side.
Appears on 5 albums.
You want to be able to click on any of the albums and select this sone, Without it having to be on your arddrive 5 times. Correct?

If so, Isn't each version of the song different? I mean some may be live, or recorded in different years.

Ie, the Song Time, if you listen to each version they are a little different.

Isn't this the same with yours?

No, live versions 'don't count'. Duplicates in this case, are exact the same song, same version. I check this by playing time and listening. (BTW, I've got only two versions of your example  :)) But there are tracks which appear in five different places in MCs right window (and also on my computer). No big problem, I must admit, but nonetheless annoying  . . . . .

. . . . . that will be me, I guess. Yeah, I also thought of deleting them, but then the albums sorted under the view Album/Artist would be incomplete, as far as I can see. And I would have to browse through both this view as well as the playlists to find certain albums. Guess I'll just leave things as they are . . . .

Hmmmm....now that wouldn't really address the gist of his post that said, "the albums sorted under the view Album/Artist would be incomplete", now would it?  Thanks for playing, we have some lovely parting gifts for you...

hehehe

well i think what he would like to do is find out if they are the same and if so link them to one file.

MC9\mc10 does not do that and if something ever had a problem and he had to re-import from the file it would all be lost.

the only way around it is if MC10 would save a place holder (small dat file) and when a user imported it would somehow link the file back to the album.

but again MC10 does not do this.

Right-on.  I've seen requests for this before, and to be honest, I've really never understood *why* people would want this. Drives are fairly large these days, so I am guessing it isn't a space issue.  Just seems to complicate things to me...kind of like if a Greatest Hits album on CD said, "Insert Rush's "Fly By Night" and play track 3...okay, now insert Rush's "Moving Pictures" and play track 1..."
