Media Center 11.0.92 Alpha Available
« on: September 28, 2004, 03:50:17 pm »

We're still working on Media Center 11.  We appreciate your feedback on it, but MC11 may not work as expected and we can't yet fully support it.  When upgrading from MC 10, you will lose your view schemes.  Some plugins still do not work.

We recommend that you use MC10 below, but if you want to use MC 11 while we're building it, PRICES are here:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=23311

If you want a more trouble-free experience, please download Media Center 10 here:
http://www.musicex.com/mediacenter/download.html

Media Center 11 is available here:
ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter110092.exe  [see price link above]

Recent Changes

11.0.92 (9/28/04)

1. Fixed: MP3 tagging could be slower than expected in some cases.
2. Fixed: Mouse wheel scrolling in the Library Browser could cause a crash.
3. Fixed: Starting a new track with a different track paused would cause a little bit of the old track to be played.
4. Changed: Double-clicking a Library Browser grouping no longer considers the click on a single item, so all the groupings won't be played. (depends on configured double-click mode)
5. Fixed: OGG encoding (ripping, converting, etc.) was not working in some cases.
6. Changed: WMA tagging would not store Album Artist in the (new) standard way.

11.0.91 (9/27/04)

1. Fixed: Portable device detection by MC modified to accommodate multiple USB players with playlist support.
2. Changed: Portable device detection based on name vs serial number.
3. NEW: Scrolling much faster and cleaner in most areas.
4. Fixed: Scrolling in "Tag Info" Action Window could look animated in the wrong direction.
5. NEW: Several speed enhancements and some visual tuning for the Library Browser.
6. Fixed: Library Browser would sort groupings by track number so albums got mixed.
7. Fixed: Some Action Window pages would fail to properly arrange their text in certain cases.

MC 11 Improvements

  • CUE file playback support with sample-accurate MP3 seeking
  • Many Theater View enhancements
  • Animated Direct3D file browsing
  • Split views so you can look at two (or more) views at the same time (ex. look at Media Library and Playing Now together)
  • Vastly improved database engine capable of handling 100,000's of files and large amounts of metadata (lyrics, bios, etc.)
  • Several memory and speed enhancements -- like database and skin unloading when minimizing MC
  • Much of MC's interface can be translated to other languages
  • Integrated database import and update with smart broken linking repairing, and other nice features
  • MC can run with guest permissions on Windows 2000 / Windows XP
  • New view customization system with more flexibility for thumbnail size, text, etc.
  • Options dialogs reworked -- several small options added
  • Added multi-zone synchronization
  • Added Album Gain support
  • Document support with full text searching / indexing
  • Pane auto-sizing
  • Tile view that allows fully customizable Track Info style tiles to be used in file lists
  • New database caching layer that makes a huge speed difference in many areas of MC
  • File tagging happens in a background thread so MC can continue to be used while it's saving tags
  • Basic image editing
  • Enhanced album grouping for pictures so pictures taken together get grouped without any user intervention
  • Preview mode to only play the intro of songs
  • Video CD support
  • Audio resampling uses Shibatch's high-quality SSRC filters

MC seems to have been really grabbing some system resources lately. I'm getting upto 75-80 % used by MC while minimalized.  I'm hardly able to surf (with Firefox) while listening to music. Burning cd took upto a 100%! Not cool. It worked better in earlier versions, please get it fixed!

I just installed a new hard disk today (Maxtor 300GB SATA).  Before I installed it, I had two drives (M: and F:) that contained my library.  M: had about 3/4 of my library, F: had about 1/4.  When I installed the new drive, I moved the contents of drive M: to the new disk, then changed the drive letters around so my new disk was drive M:.  After this, I moved the contents of F: to M: (new).

After this process, I loaded up this version of MC and proceeded to do an Import/Update.  MC is crashing relatively quickly during the update process.  It successfully scanned the existing database, found around 2500 files (the ones that I moved) and starts importing them.  After anywhere from 15 to 150 files it crashes with this message:

"Media Core has encountered a problem and needs to close.".....

Edit:  I ended up fixing my library by filtering on Hard Disk Location and doing a find and replace.  But, it's probably something that should be looked at.

At some point in the last few builds media center seems to have deleted the info in the name field for about 70% of files. I was able to recover it with a fill properties from filename.
Scrolling through my files the majority of the list was blank in the name column.

Hi
My Archos recorder is not working on version 11.0.92.
I saw a recent post on it asking to put back the same way version 10 work with portable.
I saw some improvement for portable but being french, I do not understand everything.
Do you work on specific archos problem. Can I wait for a working version?

Thanks for this great software?

Just wanted to drop a line to say I think the addition of library browser is really good! I like it a lot.

I did get a crash the first time i tried to used it though.

Here's what i did:
- I upgraded/started MC
- Started playing a song from the last playing now i used
- Clicked on Library Browser
- scrolled down using keys/ remote
- Pressed enter
--> crashed

Not sure if this is going to happen again, I'll let you know.

-Cascius

:::::::::::EDIT::::::::::::
After a few more tries I've found more info on where the crashing problem comes from.

Please reffer to the following thread to get the info:
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=3;action=display;threadid=23817

Peace,

I moved this from 11.91 to here as I was the last post on 11.91

How do you limit the number of backups produced for MC 11.  Currently it backs up every time (that's ok) and appends a date.  Problem is that it adds another backup and does not delete any of the prior backups.
I would like to keep 2 or 3 and use an automated backup to get it offsite.

For now, you'll have to delete the backups by hand or disable the automatic backup if you don't want them.  We may allow some sort of limit, but backups are small (relative to a modern drive) so we're not sure it's worth it.

2 Problems:

1) Whenever I reboot my PC, when windows starts up, it opens a windows explorer window on the desktop open to G:\Program Files\J River\Media Center

This folder contains a Data folder and MFShellExt.dll - could this have something to do with why Right click importing appears not to work as it did before?

2) In the new library browser, I navigated through the artists to select one (Tom Jones).  I then selected to view the files in one album.  Once I saw these 19 files I wanted, I clicked on the Action Window to select "Burn CD or DVD".  Media Center then threw up a empty file listing pane on the bottom that flickered back and forth, dumped me out to the top level file listing, and finally did some more ugly gui flashing before settling down and letting me navigate back to the files I wanted.

Burning CD issues:

1- While in Library Browser mode, clicking on "Burn CD" in the A/W Library Browser kicks you back to the beginning of the list so you have to hunt your Artist/Album again.

2- MC reports that I have selected more data than the disk capacity, However, I had selected less than the blank's capacity of 700mb (could it be mis-interpreting it to be a 650mb disc?)

Pascal,

We will implement support for Archos in MC 11 soon. Can you post what the default volume label name is for your particular Archos?

 Bugs

1.  I can't burn an audio CD from flac files.  These files play in MC without any issues.
2.  Manually adjusted column widths are not remembered between sessions or when alternating between views.  Autosize columns option is turned off.

Requests:

1.  Full FLAC support (encode & decode) including tagging.  MC will play FLAC files, but won’t tag them.
2.  User adjustable Album Gain.  Album Gain was a welcome addition to MC11, but it needs to be user adjustable (as the Replay Gain proposal outlines).  I suggest that the AG calculation be performed upon audio analysis, after which the user can make manual adjustments as they require.
3.  The option to turn off AutoRip.  To me, this is one of the most irritating things I have seen.  I want the ability to rip multiple CDs without MC taking off on its own and potentially ripping a bunch of “unknown – unknown” tracks or accidentally overwriting music files I have already ripped (it gives no warning).
4.  Ability to update the server's database using the client (also asked for many times).
5.  The option to reduce thread priority during audio analysis.  Currently my computer (AMD XP 3200) gets sluggish when I am analyzing files.  Right now, I reduce the priority manually with the task manager, but it would be nice if this was automatic.
6.  Make 'Tools > Options > File Location > Base Path' always be the default for renaming operations.  I would rather change it on the fly for exceptions than have to remember to constantly check it to make sure it is correct.  If I perform a rename and need to change the base path for this one time only, MC defaults to this changed value next time instead of using the "Base Path" defined in options.
7.  Ability to connect directly to MC11’s library database and perform queries.
8.  “File Manager” function.  Suggest:  when dragging files/folders in the My Computer section of the Tree View, MC should update the database for all files affected without having to perform an import/update.  The current method of “Rename Files from Properties” to move files around leaves behind ripping logs, covert art and whatever other files you have associated with your music.  The result is that you end up with a bunch of extraneous folders containing only a few items that should have been moved with the music.

1- Right-clicking on music files in a Windows folder and choosing "Media Center -->> Import" should (IMHO) pop-up MC to show the newly imported files for tagging, playing, etc (it does this upon file import from within MC when it finds/imports new files).

2- While in Library Browser mode: if you select a Genre, then select an Artist, then browse the Albums for that Artist . . . .
when you click "Clear Selection" it not only clears the Artist, but also the Genre, requiring you to begin all over from the start.
Could the "Clear Selection" be made to clear the next higher field ONLY (Artist), leaving the others (Genre) sticky for continued browsing within that selection?
(This should become increasing useful should there be further development which increases the number of Panes and fields to more than the current four)

3- Is there a way to get Library Browser mode to display Three (3) Tiles across? I tried changing my desktop resolution but could not quite get it.

MC still shows .asf files in the 'Audio' views.  This makes it hard to 'Analyze Audio', among other things.

Files aren't properly imported from folders with a comma in the name.  MC reports that no files have been imported.  If the folder name is changed and the import repeated, MC reports no files have been imported and the correct number of files have been repaired.  The files are imported though

If a folder has 2 or more sub-folders, the  Disk Location view shows a folder called "All" containing all files in the library of the selected media type.

When I'm in Start, browsing the net, if I go to Playing Now and then back to Start it reloads the default first page. That's a bit annoying. Isn't it possible to make it remember the last page and not load the first everytime I open it?

Can we see some improvements to the COM interface?

I would love to see MC change the way it gets images. Instead of reusing the same temp image, maybe let people provide a unique key (maybe just use 0-9). One temp image is created at a time for each key. In this way a person could load more then one image at once. I think if I could load just 3 synchronously then the image drawing in my app would be fast enough that the user could barely see it, if at all.

Importing files from within MC, MC reports files found, stalls for a few minutes, then switches to the Media Library V/S where it shows  . . . . . n o t h i n g,
instead of showing the files that it just imported like it used to.
