One of the nicest features of the "My Computer" view scheme was the ability to see inside nested folders. I would really like to see it put back in.

A lot of the time when I am managing my MP3s, I do not want them to be imported or at least not imported right away. I'll load a bunch of MP3 folders into a directory hierarchy and use the recursive view to find all the files in the particular tree. I then use the rename from properties to relocate the files.

Another use is to re-organize the files on my handheld. Today I tried to find all the files on my handheld and use the rename funtion to change the structure to Genre\Artist\Album but couldn't. I had to import the handheld's files, view them in the Imported Today playlist, rename them, then remove them from the database. This is too much work.

I think it may have been removed because when you clicked on the My Computer root, it tried to build a view encompassing *all* media files, and this could be very time consuming.

However, I always thought the options in the status bar did the trick, basically:

1) Recursive view - only media files
2) Recursive view - all files
3) Non-recursive view - only media files
4) Non-recursive view - all files

You could always set the root to a non-recursive view, and enable recursive viewing only for your working views.

What's wrong with windows explorer?  I just locate the files there and add them to playing now using right click>media center>replace and play.  Then I can rename or whatever before I'm ready to import.  I never used the tree in MC as I found it unwieldy to have so many branches of the tree open.  I don't really see any need for a My Computer view inside MC - it's just clutter to me.

Like the original poster, I sometimes need to do things like Audio Analysis and tag fixing on a batch of folders *before* importing.

My workflow:

1) rip to dedicated folder
2) audio analysis, tagging on files in that folder
3) additional processing (checksums, backups)
4) import

Windows Explorer does not have a recursive view.

I don't know what recursive means (it's not in my copy of the Oxford english dictionary) but I still don't see why you can't just locate the files in explorer, add them to playing now and do all the tagging / audio analysis that you like from there.

My approach with new files is to store them in a directory on the hard drive called 'awaiting tagging'.  I add them to PN from there, run down my tagging check list (cover art, lyrics, audio analysis etc) and then then final step is to import and rename files from properties.  The rename of course puts them in the correct directory structure removing them from my 'awaiting tagging folder'.  What could be easier?

Because sometimes I have several hundred MP3s buried deep within several hundred more folders. To do this in Explorer I have to use the Search function, then drag all the files to the Playing Now playlist. It was so much more elegent when I could simply tell MC to reveal all the media files below a certain directory and then act upon them.

I have 23000 MP3s and it's easy to find what I want.

Note: Using the Replace and play option in explorer requires that you have selected the option to integrate shell extensions.  If you don't see Media Centre>Replace and play in the right click menu in explorer check your options in MC for shell integration.

What if I am listening to a few albums already? Why should I have to use the Playing Now playlist or any playlist at all when they had a wonderful feature to display all media under a certain root which worked perfectly and now they took it away.

Why are you so insistant that I switch to your workflow? You do it your way, I do it mine. Mine happened to use a feature that was removed and I simply want it back.

This is the price you pay for using beta software ... no guarentees.

In response to JLee's post, the process he describes doesn't work for me, because I have multiple other files together with the music files in each folder, such as .txt files containing additional info, cover art, etc.

So I can't use rename from properties to move the files, etc.

My workflow is driven by the fact that I use other programs to listen/manage to music as well. (eg. MixMeister). So I do a quite a bit of processing on files in a temporary folder before I import them into various different libraries.

Sometimes I don't want to use Playing Now as my temporary working queue. Perhaps I want to listen to other music while Audio Analysis cranks away.

Once again, it was easy before. Now it's awkward.

It won't save your settings between sessions.  You'll need to set it each time you use it.
