OT Slightly - Singles Release dates
« on: February 11, 2004, 12:09:45 pm »

I have a lot of singles that are in miscellaneous folders, I want to enter the year they were released in the date(year) field. Most of the listings for the songs I can find are for an album they are on, which is no good, as it could be a recent release with an old classic on it which doesnt reflect the age of the track.

Does anyone know of a database or some way of finding out the release date of a single for this purpose, other than google!
Cheers

Have you checked www.allmusic.com? Search for the artist and you'll find the discography, including singles.

Another good source could be www.amazon.com for american singles and www.amazon.co.uk or www.amazon.de for european ones.

Hope it helps.

There is a program named Tag&Rename that will query allmusic.com for the information.  Works well...use it all the time on my tags.

Thanks for the responses Deivit and JLee, Allmusic seems like what I was looking for but at first glance doesn't look too intuative to search and find a song match, Ill have a play with it.

I wondered about the Chart Finder plugin but am not sure what it does, is it for exactly what I described?
Thanks for the help

Tag&Remane huh?  What kind of info does it find?  Is it automated with MC in any way?  Where can I read more about it?

I'm one of those anal retentive people who is always trying to clean up the tags a little more, and I can use all the help I can get.

On Allmusic.com you can pull up the artist then click to the right of  "Charts and Awards" where it says "Click here for Billboard Chart Positions & GRAMMY Awards" and more than likely the single will be listed there with the year it hit each chart..

it has charts from 1900 to 2002 from #1 to #100

it will atempt to find your music and see if it charted, if it did it will save that info to a field of the chart pos, and date.

it also will correct your "Date" field if it is found on the charts, there is like 5 or so charts.

I'm getting like this, it would be nice to have a Library that is all properly tagged, and it is my singles that are letting me down.
I was not sure whether to catalogue them as part of an incomplete album or just the single, I have decided the single because it reflects the era when the song was released (they might be part of a newish compilation album).
I'm still not sure what I want to put in the Album field though, "CD Single" or the single name or leave it blank.
Anyone elses solutions would be nice to hear

I have all my singles tagged with the correct original albums, cover art (when I can find it), and dates.  I put the word "-Singles" in the album artist field and create a view to list them all by artist.  I didn't want to clutter up my albums view with artists for which I had only one song for.  I've got 339 artists for which I have all or most of at least one album,  and 445 artists for which I only have one song.

Yeah, I'm anal..    :-[

I'm anal about being lazy  :), so I use The Godfather because it gets info such as Styles, Tones, credits and reviews from AMG as well as the other standard stuff. The problem is the interface is garbage, it takes 5-6 clicks to do things that should only take one click and related buttons are all over the screen.

Does Tag & Rename handle these fields also? I downloaded that software before I was really ready to explore all of its features so I never got a chance to figure things out before it expired. It seemed pretty nice though, but I need Style and Tone info.
