Image Associations
« on: February 22, 2004, 10:23:08 am »

Using vers. 9.1.317.   I am in the process of trying to associate
cover images with files, and am running into a problem.  I have been
unable to get Media Center to maintain the associations when it is
restarted.  I am using the correct image/get from file image command,
and while in Media Center the image is correctly appearing in the Action
Image Window, but when restarting Media Center the Image Window
says no image file for the same track that previously had it appear.
Does this association have to be saved somehow after the association.
I assumed it would be automatic.
I have my entire collection organized by artist, album and disc 1, disc 2
etc. if a two or three disc set.  All of the image files are in the corresponding
album directory and named simply cover.jpg.  Any help is appreciated.
In a related question, how do you save the Action Window setting (in
this case file info/image view) when shutting down Media Center and then restarting?  I always have to open it, click file info, and then image to have
it the way it was when before MC was shut down.  Again, a save function
I may be missing?   Thanks

I just finished the task of converting all my images from 'inside file' to a folder.jpg in the album directory.  I don't have any problem at all keeping the associations.  Try renaming the files to folder.jpg on a few albums and see if that helps.

If you decide to rename all to folder .jpg you could do this within MC in bulk.  Just use windows to do a search in your music directory for all the images you need, then add the files that it finds to Playing Now.  Change the name of all files from 'cover' to 'folder' then use rename files from properties to rename them with a naming convention of [Name].  Try a few files first and preferably backup your music directory before you start.

Once complete you can use 'Quick find in file / cover art directory' to associate the folder.jpg with the files.  MC will look in the covert art directory first so if you don't want this delete, move or rename the cover art directory first.

Thanks for the info.  So what you're saying is that MC uses
"folder.jpg" for the default.  Unfortunately, a cover display plug-in
I use for Winamp (which I also use) looks for "cover.jpg", which
is why I have them all named that way.  I guess I can just make
a copy of each cover.jpg in each directory, and then rename it
to folder.jpg to allow MC to use the same files and still be able to
use the Winamp plug-in when using Winamp.  But this begs the
question, why won't MC allow me to use the name cover.jpg, or
whatever I choose to name it.  It should still be able to associate
it no matter what I use.  Oh well,  maybe in the next version.
   Thanks again.......

I don't believe I said that.  I was just suggesting you go and do some experiments.

As far as I know MC can be pointed at any image file and it will use that file.  Folder.jpg however is a windows standard and I would be very suprised if your Win Amp plug in does not support this - maybe it's configurable.  If you use Folder.jpg then Windows will display this as the thumbnail for the folder in explorer.

I too am trying to associate images with songs.  So far I'm not having any luck.  I can't even get any image to show.  I'll continue watching for replies to your message and maybe I'll learn something too.

The reply I gave should work.  If it doesn't work for you then explain what you are trying to do and give a step by step guide to what you are doing and what the problem is.

I think I'm the one needing the step by step on how to associate a .jpg file with a particular song.  I tried to follow directions in the Help file, but it didn't work.  The directions are not detailed enough.

Step By Step

1. Select Song
2. Right Click
3. Select "Image"
4. Select "Add From File"
5. Select File
6. Select "Open"

All Done

Or:

1. Select tracks
2. Right click
3. select 'Image'
4. Select 'Quick find in file / cover art directory'
5. All done.

As I mentioned above MC will first look in the cover art directory so if you want to be sure it looks only in the file directory then delete or rename the cover art directory.  Unless you've changed the location of this via Tools> Options> File location> Track images location then you'll find it in C:\Program Files\J River\Media Center\Data.  If there's more than 1 image in the file directory then I've found that MC does not always select one unless there's a folder.jpg in there.

You may find this option quicker than 'Add from file' as that would have to be done separately for every album whereas 'Quick Find in...' can be done on a whole bunch of tracks all at once.

A quick follow up on my original post.  Thanks to your info, I was
able to achieve what I was trying to do.  You were correct in saying
that folder.jpg should be used.  I renamed all of the cover.jpg's to
folder.jpg and voila, next time I started up MC, ALL of my album folders
showed the correct album cover in the action window/image window.
Also, the Winamp plugin I am using ALSO shows them using folder.jpg,
so you were right again.  (The info for the plugin said to use cover.jpg,
but if it had said to also use folder.jpg it would have saved me a  lot of
grief!)
So to anyone else having this problem, assuming you have all of your
Mp3's in album folder order, just use folder.jpg and they should all appear
when you reboot MC. (BTW, it would be nice if JRiver put this info in
the help file........)
    Thanks again.......

Thanks for the help.  The add from file function works fine, but the quick find function doesn't which is what I was originally trying to use with no luck.  The "quick find" does not bring up the cover art folder to select from.  All I have in the cover art folder is .jpg files.  Is the quick find function looking for something else?

I wish I had known about "folder.jpg" when I first started storing covers with the mp3s. I had already stored about 11K covers (jpgs & bmps) together with the mp3s in their album folders and I've used the "find in file" to associate them in MC. It has worked pretty well with my MC 9.0. Occaisionaly MC will drop a cover or 2.

However when I recently was moving my drives around I lost about 3500 associations and because I hadn't been doing regular library backups, I had re-associate all 3500 covers. As I was doing this, I put each cover in a new folder.jpg file within the album folders.  Big Lesson learned: Backup, backup. backup!

But I still have around 9000 jpgs & bmps that are not in "folder.jpg'. Is there any way to change them en-masse?

Quick find does a quick find.  It does not come up with anything to select from.  Put the files in the album folder named folder.jpg like I said and then use quick find.  Otherwise use add from file and do each file separately.
