Request: iPod On The Fly Conversion Cache
« on: March 08, 2004, 09:39:53 am »

Any chance that files converted during on the fly conversion to a portable can be kept in a temp directory (so they don't need to be converted everytime?).  If MC could check to see if the tag info matches exactly it would just use the pre-converted file, if not it would re-convert before transfer?  This would effectively allow me to maintain a second MP3 version of my music library without having to synchronize tags across both libraries.  This would really help clean syncs to my iPods.  Any thoughts?

Already if files exist on a Portable, they will not be resent (assuming the tagging matches) and therefore they will not be reconverted.

Steve, a few questions:

What is the best configuration of MC to transfer songs to an iHP-140. It takes me a lot of manual handling b4 I get it done.

Is there a link which explains things?
Please build a plug-in for this superplayer!!

I guess I'm asking because I've had to reinitialize several times recently.  Recreating 40GB of files takes a while.  Just a thought.  This would also allow quick synchronization with other portable devices...

Marsies,

Hard to say, we don't have this player.  If you tell me what you are currently doing, then I can recommend some alternatives.

gbdesai,

If you are planning to have two copies of the files on your PC (one for transfer and one for playback in MC) this can easily be managed with playlists and smartlists. Is this what you are thinking of doing?

Steve, if I would live there you could borrow mine.

I tried a few things but I also ended up with files missing or another format on my PC instead of ape. What I do now is:

  • copy ape files from my PC to another directory
  • convert and move files to iHP-140 with MC
  • delete files, automatically with MC
I would like to be able to drop files in the AW and that the Iriver database is updated.
Tagging with ogg, is that different from with mp3?

Please make a plug-in. Personally I think that a few enhancements to this part of MC for version 10 would be good. Like an iRiver plugin  :D

MarSies,

Try dropping your ape files on the Action Window and then select 'Options'. You will see the option to convert your files on the fly to your player. No need to convert and then delete.

Steve,

I finally tested it. Don't know what changed but twith the latest 10.0.90 build it works. Must have done it wrong the first time i tried.  ;D

Only it seems that there are no subdirectory's possible anymore according to group and album like in MC. Also it does not show you the size of data that will be tranferred. I understand that that is not possible but just approximately would be nice. Output for the conversion proces could be clearer!

I would like to know on which parts MC supports other handhelds like for instance iPOD's better. Where can I find that info.

Please Plugin the iHP-140. Want me to contact iRiver for a player?

Can you clarify what you mean by this?

If you drag and drop files on the action window, it reports the number of files to transfer and their size. The conversion process status was improved in today's build.

Sorry, I don't understand the question.

Thanks for the offer. We have been in touch with them already but are not ready to move forward on this.

Steve,

  • Explanation 1
When you select tools > advanced tools > convert format (>options) then you can set parameters to copy/move files to the handheld drive letter. Then the songs will be stored in the directory's according to artist and album name. Now all the files are stored in teh root. [Got to recheck this because it seems that it might be different from what I tought. Gonna delete all songs and start all over again.]

  • Explanation 2
Besides just dragging and dropping files I wonder if there is more management possible from MC. Is it possible with players who have plugins to manage the database of the handheld. Or to change settings/tags/files on the handheld. Is automatically synching the iHP-140 possible ?

  • Explanation 3
In my latest E-mail to iRiver I mentioned a salesincrease if there would be a plugin for the iHP-140 for MC.  ;D

I downloaded the latest MC version 91 and the handheld transfer proces has not signfically changed. What about:
Estimated time of conversion and information of the songs to do;
Check is songs are already there;
Database for the handheld like on the PC;

Maybe I need to read more info, but I can't find it in "help".
