Feature request
« on: April 13, 2004, 02:07:09 am »

I was wondering if it would be feasible to incorporate a "Write Protection" or "Protect" field to each item in the database.  This would be a boolean flag that is set by the user and would prevent unintentional changes when doing maintenance work on files/tags.

I envision setting it to true after you have gotten your flags "just right" and didn't want any changes being made to them by accident (which is rather easy to do).  A simple click would turn it off and you could then modify data as you wish.

.... and a question like this: Do you really do not want to change this item ?

But serious: No, please, no more flags in the database. Please use your brain before using your keyboard. I think it's more complicated to change flags before you can change entries.

You probably thought of this, but... presumably making your files read only would protect them from inadvertent changes, although it wouldnt protect against changes to MC library tags of course. You can use a library backup for that as a last resort.

If I can riff on this for a minute, one thing Ive always wanted to see in MC is a multi level undo, a la MS Office, or at least an undo function that tells you in advance exactly what operation its going to undo rather than just plain Edit/Undo. Im saving that for v11 suggestions though.

Uwe:

It would only affect you if you turned it on in the first place.  If you never wanted to use them, you just wouldn't make them visible.  In other words, if you weren't using these tags, you wouldn't have to change something to change an entry...

Lee:

Yea, I thought of that, but quite a few tags are stored in the library database (including cover art).  The other problem with this method is that you would get a bunch of Windows error messages if something that was write protected was included in the selection.  Multiple level undo would be great as well.

It was just a thought I had to make MC even better.  I am very careful with my library and back it up after every change.  This would make working with large numbers of files a little safer.
