Does Media Server require an Internet connection?
« on: November 20, 2002, 08:58:51 am »

Can you tell me with regards to running media server on a wireless p2p network whether or not an internet connection is required. As per my other post, I have tried MJ across the network and searched for media on comp 1 to access from comp 2 and this worked. Now I would like to try MJ MS but it seems to me that there was an internet connection required. Yes/No? Are there any other quirks, limitations or what not that I would need to figure out?
Thanks, Glen.

I use Media Server constantly...

You do NOT need a public internet connection to use it.

All you need is the the IP address of the machine that's hosting the server.   Do an "ipconfig" from a command prompt to get it.  If you also have a web server running on the host machine, you'll need to pick an unused port other than "80" in the media server settings.  You can do an "netstat -an" from a command prompt to see the ports currently in use.   If your host machine's ip address is "192.168.2.2" and the port media server is listening on is "20080", you connect from the client with the string "192.168.2.2:20080"
