Long time request for dates handling
« on: April 16, 2004, 01:36:30 am »

I was one of the few that didn't upgrade to MC10. I believe you made a great effort (been lurking the build logs like every day) with MC, but I really didn't see any improvement useful enough to me.

Anyway, I wonder if the date handling has been improved in MC10, couldn't find any info on this topic.

As it is now, some date fields are presented like this: '1,1 years ago' och '23,8 days ago' etc. The dates also repeats themself so if you make a scheme with Date Imported, you could have a numerous of '1,1 years ago'. This makes any view scheme with those dates useless, even though you CAN make such a scheme.

What I would like to see is a real date format for these fields. If you could have the format (this one is swedish, but I guess it could be applied for all date formats) 2004-04-15 14:33, then you could do groupings for year, month, day, hours, minutes and seconds. This means you could display your imported files by month or year or whatever. In a View scheme. Much neater than now!

Another thing I've been looking for for ages now is the possibility to create top x lists for weeks or months or years. The basics is the same as above, but that every time a song is played, instead of just setting a "number of played", also set the date for each time played. Then you could do lists like "Top 20 songs played in March 2004". Also, you could do like in WMP, "Songs played in night" or "Songs played during the weekend" etc...

I've been seeing "workarounds" for these requests earlier, but none of them are sufficient...:(

Any thoughts about this? JRiver?

Thanks for a super product!

If you fill in the date field, you can easily browse my year, month, and day.

As for the second item, MC doesn't track when songs are played.  It's a good idea for a future version though.

Thanks for replying Matt,
I don't understand what you mean... For instance, the "Date Imported" is already filled in, if I try to browse that one by date, I only get "xx hours/days/years ago"...not being able to view it in another way.

Please explain! :/

I'm onboard for revamped date handling. I find it frustrating to enter dates in minutes. If I need to find songs imported 3 months ago, I can't just enter a date--I have to figure out what 24*60*90 is and use that number as a limiter.

Any chance of standardizing on human-readable entries?

A blurry vision:
What about a calendar view for MC? That would be so cool! (Possibilities: View images by date, when songs were played etc.)

Sorry! Couldn't resist the thought :)

Anyway, dates play a big part in our lives, one should definitively be able to use them effectively! If you wanted to take small steps in the right direction, being able to 1. remove the hardcoded output formats and 2. let the user input real life date and time formats, that would be great.

Browsing dates using the panes in MC 10 is essentially a calendar view. (except it has easier multi-select)

It's the main way I dig through my digital pictures.

Allowing other date-type fields (Date Imported, Last Played, etc.) to be browsed this way is on the drawing board.

Oh, I didn't know that! (still using mc9.1 and haven't been able to find out about all detailed features of MC10. Panes and what they're good for, for instance, is all news to me!)

Nice to hear! After all they're just dates, like everywhere else, right?
