System freezes
« on: April 11, 2004, 09:43:10 pm »

I'm getting complete system freezes, and through my testing, only MC is the common thread to repeatedly cause this. Started happening with .111 which I upgraded from .107, which was fine.

Please copy your system info from MC Help and paste it here.

Any third party plug-ins in use?

[moved from 112 thread]

I'm getting a complete system freeze on the first song with .112. After this started with .111, I went back to .107, and all was fine. Now .112 is just as bad as .111 so I'm back to .107 which is fine still.

Obviously something happened to MC between .107 and .111 to cause this to happen easily repeatedly with my system. Here's my system info from my working .107 and btw, I'm using ASIO output through a Gina by Echo card (a Motorola based audio chip) which for some reason I suspect is the culprit somehow.

thanks,

bb

Also, does it freeze if you use WaveOut instead of ASIO?

Oh, sorry didn't see this was moved here...

...third party plugs include:

Album View and Playing Now.

Will try Wave Out...also will try "official" .110 release to see what's up there.

Thanks,

BB

Also try uninstalling any third party plugins.

Also try uninstalling any third party plugins.

Are you saying these aren't supported anymore?

Update:

.110 did the same thing as .111 and .112, froze very quickly.
Then removed Playing Now, froze again.
Then removed Album View, and it's been playing smoothly for over 20 minutes, so maybe that's it, Album View.

I suppose I may be one of the last to even use this plug-in but I still love it, it offers me a view and playability of my collection that MC can't offer, not currently anyway  :(. But it is still listed on your plug pages and therefore should be supported in ANY official release which .110 is and, at least in my system, isn't supported. I'm going back to .107 because I have to have AV, just have to. But I would urge you to find this nasty bug that apparently does exist.

Thanks,

BB

Hi Bartabedian,

What version of AV are you using?   Also have you tried using AV without any database to see if the error occurs?   Also does the freeze happen as soon as you start playing something or a little while into the playing song?

I cannot reproduce the problem here and I am using MC 10.0.114 with AV 2.0.7.3 (which can be found at http://www.jdnet.co.uk/forum).

Hey Rhino, first an update, then I'll answer your queries...

After removing AV from .110, and getting it to work that way, I re-installed AV and it seems fine now. I have yet to re-install PN. Some things I tinkered with after the crashes started was skins, since all my homemade skins got wiped out in a complete uninstall of MC when trying to eliminate the problem initially. I've changed skins twice during the freezes, and it's possible a problem could be generating there, dunno, it's just a thought. I'm currently using Opus which I switched to just before re-installing AV and having it work now.

It would generally freeze just after playing the first song or near the end of the first song, but it did on occasion wait a couple songs before freezing but it was always quick, never more than five minutes before a freeze. And with my system it froze everything, not just MC. Ctrl-Alt-Del did nothing, it had to be hard reset and disk-checked each start-up, a complete crash. Oh, and I'm using 2.0.7.2, so I'll upgrade to the next one right now.

Thanks,

bb

That sounds like a hardware problem.  Bad memory, for example.

It may be a memory freeze being cuased by an MC error, which shouldn't be I agree, but it was easily pinpointed to MC and upgrades made somewhere between .107 and .110. I tried three different versions which froze almost immediately (.111, .112 and then .110) and three times went back to .107 and a happy system. That's pretty good test results for me as to the culprit in my freezes. Now .110 works after re-installing AV and changing a skin.

If it were just plain bad memory my problems would continue, and the pro audio processing and DVD video encoding\authoring\burning I do on this system would probably be locking me up as well, but it's not.

What OS are you using?

If it's W2k/WXP then maybe event viewer pinpoints to something?
