Storing multiple images in MP3s and MC?
« on: May 02, 2004, 06:21:56 am »

Hello to all,

Can MC store multiple images in MP3s and it's database? I'd like to store both the cover art as well as the back cover...

I used to use a tagger before MC that allowed to store multiple images in MP3s, but that was about 20,000 songs ago and I've since forgotten its name... LOL!

Michel.

I'll tell you what I do:

My music files have Artist/Album folder structure. I put my scans into the Album folder and import them to MC. Then I add Album and Artist tags to the imported images.

I can add those images to an album playlist or directly to Playing Now. MC shows all images in the slideshow when playing the album (Playing Now display mode: Image).

I also make a smaller 300x300 pixel front cover image and put that into the same folder, but I don't import it to MC. I just link it as an external cover art with the music files.

But the ID2 standard does allow for it, right?

As you say: Too bad...

Michel,

How your old MP3s with multiple images were handled in PB programs. What did you use? Some Winamp visualization plugin or something else?

In my opinion there is too much extra weight in MP3 files if you include large images in them. They must be quite large if you like to read the back cover information. With external images there is only one set of images for all album songs.

E.g. You have three images: front, inlay and back and the album consists of 14 songs. That makes 3x14=42 instead of plain 3.

I just like to have ALL my tags and information both in the MP3s and in the database. That way, If I lose the database for some reason, I can always rebuild it by scanning the MP3s... It happenned once last summer when I had a HD crash and suddently realized that the backup program I was using didn't really back up properly.... Luckily, I never lost anything because all of the tags were in the MP3. (Of course I did lose my playlist and play counts, but that wasn't too bad for me.)

Having all the tags in the MP3 also makes it easier when I'm playing compilations CDs (as opposed to burning complete CDs).

The size of the MP3 is not really important to me. I always rip at 320 anyway. Besides, storage is so inexpense now... I have 650 GB on my main machine LOL!

I see your point.

I think that my cover art images are media files as well as my music files.

I just tagged an image (jpg) in my MC library. The file date on the disk changed to today. I deleted the image from the database and re-imported it. All the tag information was restored. Tag information is preserved in jpg files too.

A possibility to sync a music file (or files) with certain images would be great.

I do it, when i would like more than front artsleeve for an album:
Just put one track with front , one track with back ,one track with cd artefact ect . I mix all.
Like it when playing the album i see all in the time the album is played.
