MC not playing files from server
« on: June 02, 2004, 10:06:43 am »

I did a very quick search and did not see anything pertaining to this so I apologize in advance if this is a duplicate post.

Here is the situation:  The MC client connects to the server, pulls the library information, however, when attempting to play a song, the data (name, track...) comes over, but the clock never starts running and the song never starts playing.

I have uninstalled and re-installed the client, and I have tested on another machine that all server-side functionality is there (i.e. I was able to listen to the same music on another computer).

This narrows it down to something specifically on the client computer and not the server or the music file.  I have gone through ever MC setting I can find and not been able to come up with a solution.

Does anyone know what would cause the file to not start playing on a particular computer?

Is the same (full) version running on all PC's?

Is it a wireless connection?  If so, is the signal strength reasonable?

What format of file?  MP3?  APE?  A big file on a slow connection might take some time.

Sorry, I meant to include some of that information.

Computer 1 (office DS3 connection): troublesome one
Computer 2 (office DS3 connection): able to connect and song plays

Both of the above computers are on the same network segment in the building, infact, their IP's are only 1 digit off.  The files attempted have all been MP3's.  The Computer 1 plays MP3's without issue in Winamp, WMP and other players so I figured that ruled out a codec issue.

On the server side, in the server status window, the connection for the song is accepted, the buffer is sent and then the server shows "waiting..." and the client just sits there.

Very wierd.

On the problem PC, can you play an MP3 file if it's local?

Please copy your system info from MC help on that PC and paste it here.

The problem PC plays MP3's (including the same file that we are trying to get from the server) without issue in MC, WMP, and Winamp.  In my co-worker's infinate (or is it finite?) wisdom, he went off to lunch and locked his computer, I will have him grab that info when he comes back.

Maybe you're bumping up against the three user limit?  Media Server will only support three simultaneous users.

ok... I spent all this time working with the guy... I specifically asked him 4 or 5 times if he rebooted... he said yes... just on the off chance he didn't I power cycled his machine... works like a champ now.

Sorry for the waste of time, I knew I shouldn't have trusted that he rebooted :)
