MC will play M4A, but not import
« on: May 31, 2004, 05:38:30 am »

MC10 (144) will play M4A file if I 'file/open media file' ... but won't play it via the file explorer (Win2k), nor can I import the file ... even if I explicitly ask 'tools/import' to import the directory.

Do you have Quicktime installed? If not, please install it and try again. If you are still having problems, please email me one of your problem files and I will test it.

Having the same issue.  I have QT installed.  Files play within MC but do not show up in library at all and is as if they don't exist unless I select from folder tree / open file menu.

I hesitate to install QT if I don't need it.  That is, why would I need QT if MC will play the M4A file when I explicitly open it??

MC uses Quicktime for importing and playback of AAC. How do you currently play the files outside of MC?

My apologies ... MC isn't playing them afterall.  The dialog, "file/open media file", took me through the motions, and when I selected 'open', MC instead began playing some track already in my play list, and I didn't recognize what was happening.

These M4As were just given to me, and I had no familiarity with them.  I will consider installing QT ... but I hate to think of installing yet another version of bloatware, which sometimes nags for the completely bloated install of QT.

I don't suppose a conversion is possible without installing QT(??)

shAf,

Quicktime is what we require to play and import these files. Sorry.

Hi Steve  -

I do have QT installed and the issue isn't that MC wont play the files, it's that it will not import M4A files into the library.  They simply don't show up.  Again, they will play if I select them from the file\open menu, but won't be displayed when viewing the library regardless of viewing method.   I have even gone and tagged/renamed files just to be sure, but still nothing.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

MC uses Quicktime for importing and playback of AAC. ...

I installed the Quicktime alternative available from www.free-codecs.com, and the M4A files will now properly play (and import).  However, I cannot analyze the audio, and they cannot be converted.  Can these capabilities be added to MC, or is the inability inherent in the M4A format?

digiflick,

Can you send me one of the files that will not import?

steve @ jriver.com

shAf,

It is not possible to analyze or convert these files because MC must use Quicktime to open these files.

Thanks Steve.  I'll send you a sample.  For clarification, as stated, I am able to import files into the MC collection.  It is that they do not show up when viewing the Media Library.  No thumbnails show up, nor do they appear when I do a search for the specific artist.  All M4A files are essentially ghosts in the collection.

Part of your statement doesn't make sense.  That is, MC must not absolutely require Apple's QT, because installing QT alternative allows MC to open the M4A files.  Are you saying MC absolutely needs Apple's QT for converting and analyzing? (... which doesn't make much sense either ... i.e., if you can play them, you should be able to analyze or convert them ... or, an exception might be some type of protection ... but I don't see AQT remedying protection or copyright issues either ...?...)

I would need to test this to see what is going on.

We are not playing them. Quicktime is playing them.
