Composer tag
« on: November 12, 2002, 12:25:17 pm »

The IPOD now supports browsing based on Composer, but I can't find a way to add that tag in MJ. Is Artist Album equivalent?

This must be an Itunes thing. I'm not sure if they are adding a tag to the MP3 or just an entry in the IPOD database.

Album artist isn't composer... it's something entirely different.  And it's not just iTunes, either.  Composer is a "standard" id3v2 tag; you can set it with id3-tagit, dr. tag, and another program that I can't remember now.  You can also set it with Windows Media Player 9.

I too would like to see composer being a standard MJ9 tag... probably because I'm an iPod user too.  I get the feeling that not many other folks use this tag.

Currently, on a PC, the only way to get the composer tag translated onto the iPod is to use XPlay.  I'm hoping that in the future, this tag will be a standard part of MJ and MJ's iPod plugin will allow it to be transferred onto the iPod.

PS, JimH, please don't ban me for plugging windows media player 9!  I've learned my lesson, I swear!  ;D ;D

Thanks. I think it is a valuable tag and I would have used it if it was in MJ. Seems like a no brainer for Classical music.

So if I have that tag stored in a file, there is no way to view it in MJ?

If not I guess I'll use Artist Album.

If not many folks use it, then why did IPOD implement it?

Apple put it into the iPod because iTunes supports it.  When iPod firmware 1.2 first broke, supporting the composer tag, iPods were still officially mac-only.

One of my biggest gripes has been that Apple either chose not to include composer tag, play count, and sound check functionality with the PC iPod... or they just forgot.  Musicmatch Jukebox, which ships with PC iPods, doesn't support any of this... it's something that only iTunes supports.  Sure it's a little sour grapes... a little personal angst.  But they've intentionally or unintentionally kept some iPod functions out of PC users hands.  Bah.

This is why i'm so totally excited about Steve working on the iPod plugin!  Not only will the iPod be integrated with the premier media player for PC, able to synch with playlists and smartlists just like iTunes (btw, MJ has had iTunes' "unique" smarlists since mid-2000), but all it'd take is the composer tag being implemented as a standard tag in MJ to make it work with the iPod too.  Heck, MJ9 keeps track of play counts too -- I bet that one day, the iPod will be able to feed playcount updates to MJ, just like it does with iTunes.

Sure the plugin isn't done yet, but it's getting better every build.  Stay tuned, there's good stuff for iPod users coming from MJ.

Yeah I'm really stoked about the support for the IPOD plugin. Hopefully that also will lead to similar features for other players.

I think apple is really short-sited in it's implementation by not including the ability to create playlists on the IPOD so that you can queue songs up like a jukebox. Hopefully they will add this.

How does the sound check work? Is the song analyzed on the IPOD, or does itunes place sound check info in the database?

i have been thinking of some of this tag stuff and i am wondering if J river\Matt could provide a easy way to use and Add Id3v2 tags to the file.

basicly they have most of the work done but lets say that you want to use the id3v2 "Composer tag" you would simply go and add it thru the current interface but you could select a combo box and select the proper id3v2 tag you wish to use. MJ will then see this as a valid id3v2 tag and incert the proper Id3v2 tags into the mp3 so they would be compatable with other players and programs.
