Slightly OT - New LaCie external HD
« on: June 22, 2004, 03:26:27 pm »

1 Terabyte of HD space. External USB and Firewire. That's something like 180.000 mp3 at 192 VBR.

1,150 Euro, tax included, here in Barcelona (slightly over US$ 950)

[EDIT: 1,150 Euro is almost US$ 1,350. Sorry]

Maybe I will go for it...

Yeah, that drives been out for a little while.  I see a few problems with it.  It's really a JOBD array, no redundancy.  Additionally, since it's 4 250 gb drives, you're 4 times more likely to experience a drive failure.  To add to that, I believe that the device only has a 1 year warranty.  I wouldn't want to spend $1000 and have it fail, taking all my data with it.

A more interesting solution might be:
$150 - External 4 bay Enclosure
$500 - 5 Bay HW RAID5 Controller SATA/ATA (http://www.areca.us/IDERAID.htm)
$140 - 250GB drives on sale.

Sure it would cost a bit more, but it would give you redundancy.  Additionally, the controller is capable of migrating arrays, so you could go from RAID 1 to RAID 5, and it is capable of expanding arrays, so you could start with 3 drives and add more as you needed them.

Thanks for the info and the suggestions, Kiwi. I was not aware that it was actually 4 x 250 GB discs.

Surely I need to think more carefully about it.

Thank you!  :)
