Update file from tags only for changed files?
« on: July 24, 2004, 09:35:37 am »

I want to keep my file tags updated from my database tags. I can choose this option from the options menu but this reduces the speed when tagging lots of files as I always have to wait until the file update is done.

So I keep this option off and update all files from time to time which is quiet time consuming and unnecessary as only a few of them really changed.

But - if there was a field that would store the date when I made my last tag change to a file I could create a view scheme that would only contain such files and update only these.

As far as I can see there's not such a field that stores my last tag change?

Wouldn't such a field be useful for release 11?

With v11 you can do other things, continue tagging, listen to music etc...

The updating is done in the background.

Here is a workaround for MC 10. It is not automatic, but there is only one extra step to do:

1. Add a custom library field in Tree & View Options with the following properties:

Name: Tags Changed
Category: General
User Data: tick this
Data Type: Integer
Edit Type: Standard
Values: 0;1
Store in file tags (when possible): tick this

2. Make that column visible in your views.

3. If you change file information change also the value of that field to 1.

When it is time to update the file tags just select all files with the value 1 and change that to 0. Because you change the value of this tag also the other tags are written to the files including your earlier changes.

Interesting point is that the Tags Changed itself gets not written to the files, because the value is now zero. So the files stay clean of that now unnecessary tag.

Thanks for your idea. It's not bad but I'm not sure if I always think of this new field each time I make tag changes. So after a while I would be unsure if I really never forgot to set this value to 1. Then to be sure I again would update all files...

Maybe I should wait for a while and try it with V11.

I didn't follow on the V11 discussion so far. Probably this question is quite famous. Is it possible to use V10 and V11 at the same time? Is there a rough target date when V11 will jump into a beta stadium?

No you can't have both installed.

Back up your library, then install v11... I have been using it since the first alpha... I haven't had any problems for a while...

But Back your stuff up first...

Any changes you make in 11 cannot be dubbed down to 10
