Illegal? part 2
« on: July 25, 2004, 12:06:34 am »

I'm still getting the error message, "Illegal mode for this track," when I try to burn CDs.  I followed your advice and checked out the system info under the Help section and everything seemed OK.  I changed my settings several different ways and still get the same error.  It's doubly confusing because the first CD I got this message on burned just fine later - I don't have a clue why.  But for most of the others, I get the dreaded message.  Any help would be very much appreciated.  Thanks.

Thanks King, but I already have that.  I also tried doing a test burn first which worked great.  It's just when I go to burn that I get the message.  Any more ideas would be welcome.  Thanks again....

I don't personally know what that error message means. I hope that JohnT from J River can answer to this.

azdood, you could write here about those things I asked before. Your system info etc.

azdood posted earlier also this:
I tried to play a CD today for the first time and got an error message that read: Media Jukebox has caused an error in OLEAUT 32.dll followed by the another message with the same wording but the error occuring in KERNEL 32.dll.  How do I fix that?  Thanks.
There were no answers. Maybe these earlier errors are linked with the new one.

Alex

P.S.

I am surprised that azdood's recent "illegal" thread disappeared. Although there was that word in the subject field, it was only from MJ's own error message. Maybe someone was too anxious when cleaning up things or did that by mistake.

I wrote in that thread a generic answer about what information azdood could provide here to help others to help him/her.

I don't like to see my answers disappearing. I don't say that they are perfect (including my lack of language proficiency as a nonnative speaker of English), but I have tried my best to help. There is some work contribution included with the answers. I have also tried to avoid not suitable threads/comments.

I suppose that azdood is a first-timer with MJ. It should be important for J River to keep new MJ customers happy. Presumably they will buy other J River products in the future if they are satisfied now. In my opinion the answer is too often something like "try MC 10". I have written that answer too, but only when it was obvious that some new functionality over MJ 8 is needed.

As far as I see MJ could be supported better by J River or otherwise it probably could be retired. Or is there something behind the curtain that I don't know? It seems to me that there is a small happy family in the MC forum (nothing wrong with that), but here the contributors are sometimes treated as necessary evils. I assume that is not an intended strategy.

Though I have no intention to teach anybody how to do business. Maybe I should stop answering to other people's problems. Personally I have been quite happy with MC (and previously with MJ). Maybe I should do something more useful than writing this.   :)

Thanks for your feedback Alex.  I really appreciate it.  I didn't ignore your email about the error messages, I'm still working on getting rid of them.  There are so many different things that could cause the problem that I've started at the bottom and removed then reinstalled Windows ME.  Then I made sure all my programs like Active X were up to date.  The only nagging problem left is trying to get rid of a pesky file named: Devldr16.exe.  Even though it's part of the Creative Sound Blaster Live system it causes all sorts of weird problems not associated with sound.  It's suppose to be easy to remove by simply deleting something called the Creative SB 16 Emulation, but that option is not available to me.  I've un-installed Creative and also the Adaptec EZ CD Creator, but this file comes back everytime I start my computer.  I cleaned those programs completely from the registry, but that file keeps coming back.  I not sure that's even the problem - it just could be.

I've very new to the Media Player family and with help from people like you I'm sure I'll figure out why I can't burn CDs.  Once again, thanks for your input.

An old thread about "illegal operation":
http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=2;action=display;threadid=637

I think that Adaptec ASPI driver is still needed with MJ8 and Windows 98SE/ME.

Current address for Adaptec ASPI:
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/drivers_by_product.jsp?sess=no&language=English+US&cat=/Product/ASPI-4.70

I don't have Sound Blaster so I don't know about its drivers.

I remember that I had problems with MJ8 and Adaptec CDRW software when running Windows 98 SE (ME is quite similar). I changed to Ahead Nero & InCD and things were better but I still had occasional burning problems. They did not end until I upgraded to Windows 2000 Professional. Currently I have XP and everything works smoothly with MC 10.

It is also true that there are fewer problems with MC 10. Though I have not tried it with Windows ME.

Thanks Alex!  Great info.  I'll reinstall Adaptec to see if that works even though I thought we were suppose to get rid of our present CD burners once we got Media Player 10.  I'll also check out the other settings you sent.  Thanks.
