Bug fixes and daily builds
« on: August 22, 2004, 07:42:37 am »

Hi! JRiver,
Its always been a pleasure to use your product(at least as a trial user).Frankly and honestly,i am not the sort of person who would always buy any multimedia crap from the internet as majority of todays peoples do,i think you have some type of knowledge about this as well. Finally, i am planning to pay for (the only software) the Media Center 11,as i can easily afford it too (when a stable and non-expiring version comes out), to support for your ongoing hardwork for this beautifull allround media player.

However, I am always frustrated with those everyday bugfixes and the releases build by build almost daily. Why not test it comprehensively and fix those main bugs and make it one of the robust software like, say "nero" for example and release bug-fixed and improved/new-featured version every month or 2 or so?

And the other thing, is there any possibility to expand more file support or the codecs support in Media Center? I dont want to install Nero Showtime to play neroDigital .mp4 file and similarly other applications to play some other popular formats. As far as i know "ZoomPlayer and Core Media Player" supports any formats and any codecs/filters to play anything available, so why cannot we have this facility in an allround player like Media Center? In my view, why dont you guys try to include these innovative features and improve it, instead of giving all the time fixing some never-ending minor thing and releasing the same thing again and again?

There's a new DFX audio enhanchment released for Media Center already, why doesnt it display DFX inside "DSP Studio" in Media Center?

I hope,as a new member i didnt speak too much but just expressed my thought to you. Thanks for all your hardwork.

I honestly don't understand this sentiment.  Your saying it's better to give us fixes later rather than sooner?  You have a choice to NOT use a fix if it doesn't effect you, but what about the people who are specifically waiting for a certain fix?  You think it's better to force these people to wait a couple extra MONTHS for this fix rather than giving it to them right when it's ready?  Once again, nobody forces anyone to install the updates, and if everything is working fine for you, just ignore them.

One of the reasons I like JRiver -- one of the BIG reasons -- is because of the fact that they do release rapid fixes (although the fixes seem to have suddenely slowed way down recently.)  I've seen problems posted one day, and the fix posted less than 24 hours later.  This, to me, is a FANTASTIC advantage to using Media Center, and something that separates JRiver from other developers.  I'm rather amazed that someone would think of this as a bad thing.

PLEASE don't ask for fewer updates just because you feel compelled to keep seeing if they're available.  Instead, just wait a couple months in between checking for them.  This way, you don't have to think about updates for as long as you like, but the people that NEED the fixes won't have to wait so long for them.

I have to say Im with Larry on this. If I understand, you seem to be asking for more new features but less of the regular builds needed to stabilise them. Sure, it'd be nice to have a constant stream of new features with no new bugs introduced, but i cant remember seeing that with any other application before.

Dont forget that MC11 is an Alpha release. The regular builds are for those who want to test it and report problems. If you are trialling v11 you cannot expect anything other than near-daily builds and ongoing problems. This has been JRiver development policy for at least the last few versions in my experience - Im sure its not necessarily better or worse to other software companies, just different - but it does have some advantages in term of responsiveness.

MC10 builds are coming onto the board much less often at the moment. MC 10 is rock solid (for me at least), and if you simply leave it be, it will notify you of updates periodically as they are considered stable and released. It goes without saying that you dont have to install every build if you are happy with your installed build - curently theres very little new in terms of functionality coming in with this version.

Of course if you have problems with MC other than feature requests you should report them here and Im sure youll get a solution. And put in your feature requests, too - nothing to lose.

Dont worry about speaking your mind - its the participation on the board that helps make MC the product it is.

Welcome neo__cool!

I whole heartedly agree with the previous 2  posts and as lee mentioned  MC 11 is only in the alpha stage and is really only intended for those who want to participate in the testing and further developement of the product.

MC 10 is the current release version and the builds are now very infrequent and only to fix specific problems, (as you suggested), no new features are really being added to that version, (they will be in v11 when it is released, most of the new features wil be there when it moves to the beta version).

As you said, "I can easily afford it", so buy v10, when v11 is released everyone will get a chance to upgrade to the new version at a discounted price depending on the version they're moving from (this is an assumption by me based on past experience here)

As far as the other players, they don't even allow participation in the development proccess, you get what they release, finis, basta.

So, the moral here is, get your sugestions for the new version in  as  soon as possible.

Comentary (up to a point!), suggestions and questions are ALWAYS welcome. J River really does listen (they don't always comment) and we all learn more from everyone's particpation.
