How random is random?
« on: August 29, 2004, 02:30:20 pm »

Hello,

There as been a couple of messages on this forum as to how random was MC. I've been one of those who had a feeling it was not totally random. I know the code as been modified a couple of months ago about this anomaly.

Lately, I've been using Audioscrobbler. It's the perfect tool to log your listening habits.

In the past 2 weeks, I've listen to 450 random tracks from single artist or band (not counting tracks from compilation albums, because the current plugin cannot log those).

Here's an example of one of those anomalies.

I've listen to 8 random Plastikman tracks. I have 51 different tracks from him. MC managed to play 3 times of the same song in random mode from over 14000 different tracks in the system!

Is this a freak accident? I have 2 or 3 more artists that MC managed to play twice the same tracks over 14000 different ones in 2 weeks.

Any idea what's going on? Should I buy a lottery ticket?

Take care,
lpr

Nope.  That's the nature of randomness.  If you didn't get duplicates from time to time, that would be pretty freakish!  Although I think, if I remember correctly, that some of the pure randomness was taken out in favor of a more "spread out" approach.
