MC10 -- move playlists?
« on: September 12, 2004, 04:32:51 pm »

Is there some way to move playlists to a new computer? I am switching to the laptop with all my music on an external HDD and I'd really love to take my playlists along. There must be a way, I just can figure it out.

Thanks.

Have you tried...

File\Export Playlist...

or

File\Export All Playlists...

Uhm, well, if I "Export all Playlists" in MC on one computer, how do I Import them on the other computer? I have tried Import Media, but it does not seem to import playlists as playlists. Or maybe I'm having a technical problem.

I was thinking I could just copy the Playlists folder and MC would somehow recognize it automatically, but this might be wishful thinking on my part.

You can right click them and select "Media Center -> Import" or just drag them to MC. You must have identical folder structure in your new computer because all paths are included (and the drive letter).

If you want to copy the whole Media Library to your new computer you could restore a Media Library backup. It includes everything.

If your files were previously e.g. on the "C:" drive and your new external drive is e.g. "D:" you can fix that inside the new MC with Find and Replace tool (Tools -> Library Tools -> Find and Replace):

1. Make a Media Library backup on your old PC. (File -> Library -> Backup Library)
2. Copy your media files to the external disk. Don't alter the folder structure. Copy also the backup zip file.
3. Open your new MC with an empty libary.
4. Restore the Media Library backup.
5. Select all media files (click the Media Libary tab in the MC tree and press Ctrl+A)
6. In "Find and Replace" check only "Filename(path)" and replace "C:\" with "D:\".

Oh, now I remember what the problem is. . . So, for real playlists, your suggestion works, although I have to some search and replace on the drive name. However, smartlists (which most of my playlists actually are) don't come in as smartlists. That's the issue.

Is there a way to have MC on the new computer read the smartlist definitions or do I just have to recreate each one?

Hmm, actually the import didn't work as well as I thought.

I imported a playlists. Instead of f:, the old location, it has "Compact Disc". I tried to do a Find & Replace and put the name of the new path (\\linksysstorage\music) in place of Compact Disc. MC said that it had replaced the info on 11 files, but they didn't change.

In the Tag Info box, the Filename says <Can't be renamed>. Why would that be?
