Where are the old Library Tools
« on: October 05, 2004, 01:49:37 pm »

MC10 had a menu choice: File/Library/Update Library that MC11 doesn't have, at least not in the same place.

Has it been moved or removed?

Thanks!

Tim, I was wondering about that myself, but figured that they covered it all in one fell swoop with the import media...it seems to do a backup, remove files that don't exist and fix files that have changed.  Kind of a one mouse click does it all.

But but but... :)

What if I want to have MC check to make sure that everything is where it should be?  Wasn't that a part of the old functionality?

All the functionality of Update Library (plus some nice new things like fixing broken links) was moved to Import.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing.   :-\

The base directory of my library is a hybrid of both something masterfully organized (( :P )) and something pathetically disorganized.  In other words, to blindly point MC to the directory and say, "Okay... have it!" would create a mess in terms of all the junk that would get imported which I do not want imported[/u].

On the other hand, pointing a separate "fix links" type plug-in to that directory would be ideal since everything I have moved is in there somewhere.

Please consider making the "fix broken links" a separate tool.  As a compromise, maybe you could add an option to "not import new media" or something.

I also have need to import a single directory... but I didnt want to delete the information in the "Import" dialog...

I think it could be nice to put checkboxes in that dialog to select the folders I want to import (and omit the other ones...).

Let MC import stuff.  Then remove it.

It won't reimport the removed things. (unless you tell it to in Import > Advanced)

::)

I just knew you were going to say that, but I'm sorry, that's not an acceptable solution.  My "junk" consists of literally hundreds of thousands of tid bits from all over the place for over ten years.

Okay, so, tell me this Mr. We'reGoingToGroupInconsistentItemsTogetherWhetherYouLikeItOrNot.   :P  If I at least deselect all file types before I hit the "Start Search" button, am I going to have to reselect my "default associations" again the next time I actually want to import a directory?

Okay, just discovered two things.

1.)  The file type selection combo box does not seem be associated with my "default MC associations," and
2.)  Unselecting all types yields an error message (by design, not a bug) telling me I have to select at least one type.

So in other words, you guys are forcing your users to import media for the privilege of fixing broken links.  Do you honestly believe this is a good UI design?

It may be time to clean your hard drive.

MC can't fix broken links if it doesn't find where the files moved to.  Searching your media directories is necessary for this.

And please relax a little.  Jibes about 'good UI design' don't add anything to the conversation.

How about searching without importing, a checkbox.

er..

3.)  To add insult to injury, when selecting FLAC (since I don't have any flacs), MC ended up removing 64 of my "broken links" (instead of repairing them).

They definitely exist in one of the subdirectories of the directory I told it to search, I know, because I'm looking right at them at the very moment in Explorer.  :P

The only difference is the "before" data (i.e., bad, but current MC library info) had the filename set to M:\Music\misc\<common> and the "new" location is F:\Media\unsorted\<common>.

Bummer.

Good thing a backup of my library was made.   ;D

Bah.  I did clean my hard drive, silly.  That's exactly what got me into this mess in the first place!  ;D

That'd be easy, but I'm not sure why you'd want it.

The idea is that you tell MC "I keep my stuff here", and then MC stays in step with those places.

If there are things you don't want in the library, use the remove / don't reimport idea, or else move them to their own folder.

Am I missing something obvious?

I'm not meaning any offense, but it was a serious and legitimate question.

Strictly speaking, "importing media" and "fixing links" are two independent, mutually exclusive actions, yet your interface is requiring that they can only be done together at the same time.

Because of this, it is a feature that I can never utilize, and that just seems like a waste of a good feature to me. :(

Ahh...slightly troubling this thread is..

i usually keep pending stuff in a folder called Pending.

i listen to an album from Pending, then move it to where it needs to be in the tree and then Import it into the library.

From what has been discussed here, is it still possible to do this ?

The new system works really, really well with my workflow. Just keeping playlists working as files move around is a huge step forward.
