disabling a "feature"
« on: October 31, 2002, 05:42:51 pm »

Hello everybody,
I've got MJ 8.0, and it's got an extremely irritating feature that I want to get rid of.  It's really a deal-breaker for me, and I hate to go back to WinAmp.  When I'm looking at playlists, libraries, etc, and my cursor lingers over a file for more than 1/2 a second, a little bubble pops up to tell me that file's properties, obscuring the names of other files around it.

Any suggestions for turning this off?  And furthermore, does anyone actually like this feature?

In MJ go to Settings>Options>Tree & View Settings. In upper right hand corner are the tooltips options. I have them all turned off except for the Tree tooltips.

Wow, the answer in 26 minutes.  That's service.

I agree that most people probably don't like the tooltips for file names.  Maybe the default should be "off".

I was pretty impressed with that turnaround time, too!  Thanks.

We need a 'citizen of honor' for people like Xen.

He gives so much technical but understandable answers

Concerning this  f..  tooltips -and i am very polite-.When turned of ,it would be nice to have a keyboard shortcut instead of right- properties and so on

:)..... :-[..... :'(

Thanks Z

Related to the tooltip topic is how to to turn them off in the (Windows) explorer windows. Has anyone tried this? I may have to be a martyr and do some registry hacking, but if someone has already done this....then give it up! :)

Hi,

There are 2 ways to accomplish turning off those Windows most annoying tooltips, one is following my process to edit the registry (could be dangerous for novices) the other is to download a package from Microsoft see idea #2.

1. Edit the registry as follows:

Note that this affects only Balloon Tips, not the more ubiquitous tool tips (I know how to do this as well) that appear in most Windows XP–compatible applications. Here's what you do:

Select Run from the Start button.
Type in regedit in the Open: field.
Hit Enter or click OK. This opens the Registry Editor.
Select the folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER and then follow the folder path \software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\advanced\.
From the Registry Edit menu, select Edit/New/DWORD Value. A new value will appear in the right-hand pane.
Type EnableBalloonTips and hit Enter.
Close the Registry Editor.
Log off from Windows XP and then log on again to enable the change.

2. If you are not comfortable editing the registry download this file from Microsoft's website:

Download XP powertoys(XP version of TweakUI)

Inside this good bunch of really useful stuff is a piece on Balloon Tips...

Hope this helps...

359....

I think we are talking about 2 different animals here. I'm talkin about the info tip that pops up when the cursor is over a file (where then it tells you type and size). Your procedure (1) may work for XP....but not for W2k which I have. What DOES work is changing the (existing) ShowInfoTip key from 1 (boolean for true) to 0 (boolean for false). It is in the same location in the registry as where you suggested putting the EnableBalloonTips key.

Curious....do u see ShowInfoTip key in that location in XP?

Thanks for your help

Bragging about beating Cleveland?  Very strange.  Atlanta actually fields a team.  We'll see.

Hope Miami keeps their fins off of Brett's knee.
