Help with a smartlist (for the Smartlists Gurus)
« on: October 07, 2004, 01:39:18 pm »

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to build a smartlist that picks 50 random songs from the whole library with the condition that, at least, a number of them (10, 15 or whatever) have to be never played (Number Plays=0).

I want to use it as my main playlist when I'm working with the computer, so that I can have around 3 hours of music with always some fresh music on it.

I can do it by combining two smartlists but, can it be done with a single one?

(Currently using MC10)

Thank you!

Welll, just in case anyone is interested, this is what I finally did.

Since it seems that I could not get what I wanted wih one single smartlist, I changed my mind a little and decided to expand my main playlist to make it sort of a cocktail with the following ingredients:
- 30 songs rated 3 or above.
- 5 songs rated 5-stars.
- 10 never played songs.
- 1 song of each main genre.

I created a smartlist for each one of the above.

Then, I created a "playlist group" named "Cocktail" and appended the above smartlists to that group.

Now, when I double-click on "Cocktail" I get my "Playing Now" populated with some 60 songs, of which at least 10 I've never heard before, 5 top rated songs, etc.

When the music is over, I just have to double click again on "cocktail" and 60 new songs with the same  "proportion" of ingredients will play right away.

Sorry if it's too obvious.

That makes sense - it seems straightforward to add together different smartlists by making a playlist group.

However what if you wanted to combine smartlists that depended on each other?

E.g. i could have a smartlist that chose a single artist:

[Media Type]=[Audio] ~limit=1,-1,[Artist]

And another that looked for a certain artist name in Name (e.g. if you want to find tracks mixed by artists):

[Media Type]=[Audio] [Name]=fatboy slim

But how would i combine the two to get a playlist that chose a random artist and all the other tracks that had that artist name within it?

Answer is probably "you can't", but it's worth a go....
