Server errors trying to update YADB
« on: October 03, 2004, 12:19:46 pm »

Every time I try to update YADB it fails with "server errors".  Is there anything I can do to sort it out or do I just have to accept that YADB doesn't work?

maybe it depends on what version your using.

maybe if you explain a bit more of what your doing and how your doing it someone can help.

As a committed MC user I've been hoping to improve YADB by updating with the CDs I've been ripping, but I've never yet successfully "updated" YADB in MC9, MC10 or MC11. I get the "server error" message every time I try (which isn't often these days.)

I wonder if I'm not filling in enough tags on the MP3 files I'm trying to update - can anybody tell me which are the critical fields to fill in ?

TIA. John.

there has been some bugs in the YADB within the program so depending what version you have it may or may not work.

it has been sometime since i have used it, but it did work when i used it and submited about 200 CD's

I'm currently on version 11.0.93, but I've always had this problem, going back to v10.  What I do is :-
1/ Load CD - MC gives me 3 options
2/ Check option to rip - MC checks YADB and either gives me a choice of albums, returns the album details or returns unknowns.  (I've just loaded Queens's "Made in Heaven" and YADB can't decide if it's Made in Heaven or Eminem's "The Eminem Show"!)
3/ Assuming the details are missing I fill them in, select the tracks, right click & select Library tools / Submit Track Info To YADB.  MC returns the error n files not added because of file or server errors.  It's exactly the same if I correct the track info that YADB returns.

Individual track info (it's different than CD info) does not allow updates, only new entries.

John,

Sorry not making myself clear.

I've been trying to upload info on complete CDs without success at all - never tried with an individual track. What MP3 fields on each track on a CD need to be completed before YADB will accept a submission?

I'm not sure what the difference is.  Do you mean that I should load a CD, alter the details for one or more tracks and then resubmit them all?   Maybe this is part of the problem - CDs are displayed as a collection of tracks, there's nothing that says treat this as 1 CD.

When you click "Submit Track Info To YADB", you are not updating a CD entry, you are updating a single track entry (or perhaps all the tracks on a CD). This will fail if the track has already been entered.

This data is different than the CD data. You get the CD data when you put the CD in the drive. If you want to submit improved data, you can do this by right clicking  on the CD drive and choosing "Submit to CD Database"

i never had a problem understanding this message but

maybe it would be less confusing if there was one option, and let MC figure out if it is a CD or not, and deposit the data to where it should go.

if the error message needs to be more clear then add a few more words to fully explain what the error was about

I didn't know about the right click on the CD option - thanks!  Problem is, update YADB gives a general server / file error if the track doesn't already exist,  as opposed to the explicit message when it does.

If it helps to clarify things, this is what I get if I submit a duplicate track

No surprises!  This is what happens if it's not a duplicate

There's still no explanation for this.

So does anyone have any ideas about what could could be causing this?  Is there anything I should be checking?  Any ideas about how to fault find this?

And sometimes I don't :)

I just tried to reproduce this, and couldn't (It happened right away when I tried it the other day).

YADB will return an error if any of the following fields is empty:
Title, Artist, Length, Year, Genre, Album and Position.

Then it shouldn't submit. Or at least when I do that I see MC analyze the files then submit. If they are not complete why allow them to be submitted?

Great - I'll check, but I wouldn't mind betting that's what I'm doing wrong!  Could the pop-up that says (something like) "Make sure all the fields have been completed accurately" include this info, please? Since they're not specified, I took the message to mean "Make sure the information you're providing is accurate"

You're correct.  We'll fix this.  Thanks for hanging in there to get to the bottom of it.

That's it! With the right fields completed it submits ok or returns a duplicate submission error.  Thanks for all your help!

Next question - how do I correct errors already in YADB?  I tried getting info back on Crazy Train (not an obscure track!) and the results were nonsensical!  Most were fine though!

they do not have a way to correct YADB thru Media Center.

what would be nice is if this was automated and it can be done somewhat to scrub the database.

basicly Gateley did come up for a way to send you info if you wish to help correct the yadb database Gateley can give you mor info on this.

i was doing it but i kept forgetting my user id and password

OK, I think I know what's going on now, but can someone please tell me if I've got this right?

YADB recognises CDs and records / displays things about the tracks on the CDs.
This information can be changed / updated by right clicking on the CD, not the displayed tracks.

YADB recognises tracks and records / displays things about them, but only after they've been ripped.
Tracks can be added to YADB, but not updated.
All the required information must be present or the addition fails.

Track information added as a CD is not available as individual track information i.e. to keep YADB fully up to date I need to add the track info via the CD option and then, once they've been ripped, add them again via the add to YADB route.

Pretty close. You can submit track info straight off the CD (if MC knows the tag info).

Yes, you should submit twice.

Thanks for that!  Can something be done to make the process of updating YADB more intuitive?  I've only had the "tell me about this cd" pop-up appear once (and that was this weekend) but I've had a panel of blank fields many times.  I haven't seen anything in the help about the right click on CD option, so I'd assumed that by completing those fields and submitting them to YADB that was all I needed to do.  Since they didn't include all the necessary fields, the submission would fail.

Could the user be asked if they'd like to submit data to YADB when a rip's been completed, and then have a more structured submission process if the answer's yes?  Maybe an unsuccesful initial YADB query could set a prompt flag?

If you try and update YADB  and click OK when asked if you want to submit, it produces the expected result, but typing <return> or Y always produces a server error.
