Can you create Playlists from text files?
« on: October 18, 2004, 05:45:55 am »

Hi there

Is there a way to format a list of songs outside of Media Center that then can be imported as a playlist.

For example tonight I have some friends coming over and I want them to pick from my music (that I am emailing them) a list of songs that I can then import some how into a MC playlist?

Another use would be if I find a nice compliation of songs on the internet from a music store and I know I have most of the songs, so would just like to be able to import the list and for it to make a playlist from what I have?

Kind Regards

Dave

If you can import an m3u playlist by dragging it into an MC playlist into it.

M3U playlists are the way to do it, but it is not that simple. With MC the complete filename path must be included unless the files are in the same folder (only the filenames are needed then).

Make a playlist in MC and export that to M3U format. Open the resulting .m3u playlist with Notepad. You will see what I mean.

So you must first make a master M3U playlist with MC. The others can then make selections from it. E.g. by deleting the unwanted entries or by adding comments to it. Perhaps you could open the playlist file in a spreadsheet program and use that spreadsheet for distributing the list. When you get the spreadsheet files back you can combine them and save again to M3U playlist file format (plain text).

You can also use clipboard for transferring library information to a spreadsheet program. Make a playlist in MC - > adjust your view to showing the fields you like copy (the filename path must be visible) -> select all -> copy -> paste to an empty spreadsheet.

Afterwards you can take just the filename paths column from the edited spreadsheet and save it to text only format with .m3u extension and import to MC.
