Question about handling 2 libraries on same database...
« on: October 18, 2004, 08:50:33 pm »

I am almost ready to leave on the RTW trip, and I think my friend and I might take one laptop to share for picture editing, and music management.  We don't agree on the reatings on many songs, so I'm gonna start 2 libraries.

How will the tags and actual files be affected by 2 people changing ratings.  Can I turn off 'update tags when the file changes' in one library, or is it a global selection?  If I turn it off, will the libraries keep this info straight?  Any other things to consider?

Thanks

If it's only the rating you're worried about, perhaps you can create a custom field "Friend's rating" for the purpose of the "second" rating?

You will not be able to show the rating of the custom field as "stars" but, on the other hand, it will not mess up with your own ratings.

You may want to see this thread as to how to set up the "secondary" rating:

Hope it helps.

Well, he wants to be able to use his ratings to keep his iPod organized as well.  So i think I will have to use 2 libraries.  I could be wrong, but I'm hoping someone can give me some great advice on this.

Best would be if JRiver allows stars for custom fields. This has been requested for some time now.

I think thats all that is required, the view schemes can handle custom fields quite well.

Actually, that would only work for me if I could tell MC to use that filed to synch to an iPod instead of the normal rating field, which I'm sure won't happen.  At least not in the next 2 weeks before I leave the country.

Still hoping for a reasonable easy solution. :)

I dont use an iPod so you will have to excuse the ignorance.

Is it not possible to sync to the iPod using a custom rating field ?

Is it only possible to use the built in rating filed with MC to sync to the Ipod ?

I believe that's true.

This looks like a Steve G question then :)

User Profiles seems like a more elegant way of handling this. I'm guessing if they allow user profiles, then one could login and during a sync only that user's ratings will be synced.

But it can get tricky as one has to login as said user to access ones own settings, adds an extra level.
The way things are setup currently its transparent.

I guess you are stuck with using 2 libraries. Might I suggest that you create 2  shorcuts on your desktop (for each user)  that would load the respective user's library when clicked. Might have to create some kind of batch file and use those mjext commands.

Its just an idea of the top of my head, am not sure if its even possible, but if it is, might be easier to use MC with multiple users this way.

Yeah, I posted it in the handhelds forum also.  Steve said if enough people would find it useful, he might implement something.  So far no one else has expressed an interest. :P

This sounds like a great idea.  I have no idea how to use mjext commands though.

I don't suppose anyone would want to post up an example of this for me.  I leave in under 2 weeks, and I don't think I have the time to learn anything new before leaving.  I'ts amazing the amount of loose ends that need to be tied up before leaving on a RTW trip that's expected to last several years.  I haven't gone into work in over a week, and I've done more work than I have in years.  Scary.

The bad side of the shortcuts route is it would not be possible to simutaneously enter in ratings for both users, like you could if there was a custom ratings field for the other user. I imagine its quite common that you both would listen to music at the same time.

Getting iPod to sync multiple ratings is really whats needed here.

Allowing more than one person to use MC at the same time would be a good thing to have.

We wouldnt' be needing/wanting to rate at the same time.  We will mostly handle that with the iPod.  i just want to be sure that the iPod ratings get back to the correct library.  I would be unhappy if he accidentally overwrote my ratings, as would he if reversed.  I realize that we should still have the correct ratings on the iPod, but you never know.  Redudnant safety is best her, I think.

Now, where can I look to learn more about how to use mjext commands in my shortcut to open MC?
